Brahms - Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45: I. Selig sind, die da Leid tragen (Part I)

There is something deeply unsettling and restless about this performance, I can't put my finger on it though. It's lyrical (just listen to that soft, yet snappy brass!), transparent but there's something very evanescent and fragile about Kegel's take on the work, I find it deeply moving. Kegel's unjustly forgotten these days, he was by far the most important champion of contemporary music in the communist German Democratic Republic, not always an easy role given the politics at the time. He was frequently plagued by depression and reputably not an easy person to work with - a perfectionist who molded the Leipzig Radio Choir into the best German-speaking choir at the time, one of the best choirs in the world. Brahms' Requiem is primarily a choral piece (the orchestra's prime purpose is to comment and back the choir, one of its anachronistic qualities) it profits immensely from the choir's virtuosity, knowledge of the text and native pronunciation. Kegel's interpretation is both analytical and lyrical, he's not afraid to take liberties with the tempo either - you can almost smell the brimstone as the choir sings, no, yells "Der Tod ist verschlungen in den Sieg" at the top of their lungs. But even during the intense fugues each word is intelligible. The orchestra plays beautifully, especially the brass. Siegfried Lorenz with his clean, almost tenor-like timbre sings the baritone solos beautifully, his unpretentious, yet clear diction is a marvel in itself, far too many ...

"The Buddhist Attitude to Sensuality" by Ajahn Brahm

Denial of the senses, labelling them evil or even completely prohibiting sense indulgence is not the Buddhist way. Meditation and mindfulness allow practitioners to deal with sensuality wisely, particularly if it is destructive to one's self or others. And, according to Ajahn Brahm, those who *really* want to be deviant and head towards nibbana (enlightenment): "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side..." - and try celibacy.

Ajahn Brahm: Dharma talk on loneliness

About five years ago I stumbled upon this monk's talks. How he speaks and teaches the pratical applications of Buddhism is what really brought me to this profound religion, a "religion" which I had earlier thought of as foreign and supersticious. I soon learned that the complete opposite was true, and to this day these very teachings help me through every aspect of my life... so, I thought I'd share this with everyone here in hopes that you might get something from it as well. :) This particular teaching by Ajahn Brahmavamso is on the subject of 'loneliness'. There are many, many more topics that he has spoken about and can be found on www.bswa.org -- as well as the talks of many other insightful teachers. I know this is a very long video, so it's probably best to do what I do: Have it playing in the background while you do something else (for example cleaning, exercising, playing video games, etc.) ;) With Metta :) -Matt

"Superstitions" - dhamma talk by Ajahn Brahm

A hint of irreverence for all forms of superstition, lashings of humour in this talk, serve to stress that it's ONLY our personal accountability and actions that make a difference. Trinket jewellery, mindless chanting and holy water do not. Is there heaven and hell? What is the mind? Ajahn's stories of the 'Samurai Warrior and the Monk' and 'The Cloaked Emperor' provide the answers...

Karajan - Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 73 - IV. Allegro con spirito

The Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 73 was composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1877 during a visit to the Austrian Alps. Its gestation was brief in comparison with the fifteen years which Brahms took to complete his First Symphony. The symphony is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings. The cheerfulness of the Symphony has been likened with the pastoral mood of Ludwig van Beethoven's Sixth Symphony. In contrast, Brahms' First Symphony was marked by its sombre tonality (C minor). IV. Allegro con spirito Busy-sounding (but quiet) strings begin the final movement. A loud section breaks in unexpectedly in bar 23 with the full orchestra. As the excitement appears to fade away, violins introduce a new subject in A major marked "largamente" (to be played broadly). The wind instruments would repeat this and develops into the other instruments as well. Bar 155 of the movement repeats the symphony's first subject again but instead of the joyful outburst heard earlier, Brahms introduced the movement's development section. A mid-movement "tranquillo" section (bar 206) elaborates earlier material. The first theme comes in again (bar 244) and the familiar orchestral forte is played. This time, instead of the A major theme in the "largamente" marking, Brahms allows the theme to be reprised in the symphony's home key of D major. Towards the end of the symphony, descending chords and a mazy run of notes by ...

Ajahn Brahm on Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis

On invitation Ajahn Brahm spoke at the Buddhist Maha Vihara, Brickfileds, in Kuala Lumpur about why he came to support the reintroduction of the Bhikkhuni ordination, and the advantages of having the Sasana standing on four pillars. The full title of the talk was: Is there wholehearted support for the re-establishment of the Bhikkhuni Sangha from the Bhikkhu Sangha? Ajahn is as entertaining as always and uses his unique style of presentation to get a serious message across. The video was recorded and edited by Teik Leong Lim, who gave permission to upload it.
