Army teams take to the water 28.03.12

The first sailing race of the season has been held at the British Kiel Yacht Club in Northern Germany. Teams from 20 Brigade and 7 Brigade took part in the annual Icebreaker Regatta, with Generals to Sappers among those racing. Mild weather meant it was the first time in the 13 years of the race that there was no ice to break on the first day of competition. Four British boats competed against German crews from The Kieler Yacht Club and the North Deutsche Regatta Verein. In the last passage race of the weekend Skua, the boat manned by crew from BKYC, did best amongst the Brits coming in second.

4 PARA receive freedom of Liverpool 26.03.12

The 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment have received the Freedom of Liverpool following a parade through the city. The honour marked a lengthy connection for the battalion with Liverpool and was marked by a fly-past over the waterfront by Lynx helicopters of 9 Regiment Army Air Corps, the aircraft which supported many of the same troops while they were out in Afghanistan. Lieutenant Colonel John Boyd, the battalion's commanding officer, said: "It means a lot to us to receive such recognition from a city so closely linked to our wartime heritage of the 13th (Lancashire) Battalion the Parachute Regiment. "I would like to thank the public for their continued support of my soldiers and I hope to see the already strong links between 4 PARA and the city of Liverpool grow in the years to come." The day began with a service at Liverpool Parish Church, during which the Freedom scroll was presented to the battalion. Following the parade, a civic reception was held at the town hall, hosted by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool and the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside.

The Paratroop Regiment (British Army) - History To Present Day (1 Of 2)

Documentary which reveals how the Parachute Regiment's historic missions in Normandy and Arnhem in World War II continue to motivate its recruits to this day. The Parachute Regiment is the Airborne Infantry of the British Army. One battalion is permanently under the command of the Director Special Forces in the Special Forces Support Group. The other battalions are the parachute infantry component of the British Army's rapid response formation 16 Air Assault Brigade. It is the only line infantry regiment that has not been amalgamated with another unit since the end of the Second World War. Members of the Parachute Regiment are known to the rest of the army and the British public by the nickname the Paras. The Parachute Regiment was formed during the Second World War and eventually raised 17 battalions. In Europe, these battalions formed part of the 1st Airborne Division, the 6th Airborne Division and the 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade. Another three battalions served with the British Indian Army in India and Burma. The regiment took part in five major parachute assault operations, often landing ahead of all other troops, during which they fought in North Africa, Italy, Greece, France, the Netherlands and Germany. At the end of the Second World War, the regiment was reduced to three regular army battalions first assigned to the 16th Parachute Brigade and later the 5th Airborne Brigade. Army on standby for tanker strike 26.03.12

Hundreds of soldiers are being lined up to stand in for petrol tanker drivers threatening strike action next month. The Army and Police are on standby to ensure fuel deliveries do not grind to a halt resulting in the same chaos that hit Tony Blair's government in 2000. Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said the Government had "learnt the lessons" of the past and stood "ready to act" if members of the Unite union walk out. The results of a strike ballot of 2000 tanker drivers are expected later today and a strike could begin from 3rd April. Mr Maude appealed to the union and employers, including DHL and BP, to come to an agreement that averts industrial action. But contingency plans are in place that could see soldiers being called in to drive tankers and police preventing blockades. Mr Maude said: "We are calling on the trade union Unite and the employers involved to work together to reach an agreement that will avert industrial action. "Widespread strike action affecting fuel supply at our supermarkets, garages and airports could cause disruption across the country. "The general public should not and must not suffer from this dispute and strike action is manifestly not the answer. "Although we are pushing for an agreement, we have learnt the lessons of the past and stand ready to act to minimise disruption to motorists, to industry and, in particular, to our emergency services, in the event of a strike." Unite announced last month that it would ballot members working ...

JACKAL ARMOURED HMT-400 British Army Pathfinders in Afghanistan

Film Producer: Karl PROST - Yves DEBAY ASSAUT Magazine - Post-production Sigrid CONRAD - consultant Robert Ottaviani Otaviani. A thank you to British Armed Forces, Her Majesty's Armed Forces, Armed Forces of the Crown. The Jackal or MWMIK (pronounced EmWimmick) or Mobility Weapon-Mounted Installation Kit is a family of vehicles designed and developed by Supacat Ltd at their factory in Honiton, Devon (UK) for use by the British Army. The primary role of the vehicle in the British Army is deep battlespace reconnaissance, rapid assault and fire support - roles where mobility, endurance and manoeuvrability are important - and it has also been used for convoy protection. Small production runs are manufactured at the Honiton factory but larger batches are manufactured by Plymouth based company DML (part of Babcock Marine Services, owned by Babcock International Group). The initial order was for up to 100[1] and it was announced on June 27, 2008 that the MOD would be ordering a further 72. On Jun 23, 2010 it was announced by the Ministry of Defence that 140 additional Jackal 2 vehicles were being ordered, and according to the same source this would bring the number of Jackals in service up to 500. The MWMIK can carry increased payload and fuel compared to its predecessor, allowing it to carry greater amounts of additional equipment and protection over longer distances, and it is able to support itself and its crew for distances of over 497 mi (800 km). The Edinburgh Armed Forces Day 2011, The British Army Royal Marines, RAF, Royal Navy & Army Tribute

www.willowcreekpictures.com The Armed Forces Day 2011 event took centre stage in Scotland's Capital City of Edinburgh to celebrate the work and commitment of the British Armed Forces and the Army in a Veterans Day. When is Veterans Day? What is Veterans Day? On Saturday 25th June, 2011 the Royal British Legion Scotland Motorbikes paraded down the Royal Mile High Street and through Holyrood Park past the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace, celebrating the 90th anniversary of the UK Royal British Legion Scotland. This included 90 Harley Motorbikes leading the parade ahead of the Armed Forces. A Search and Rescue Helicopter was due to fly down the High Street but I never witnessed that. According to STV News, an incident on Saturday involving a mobile phone being thrown out of a commercial jet caused delays at Edinburgh Airport including preventing some of the flying particpants from landing at Edinburgh and thus not being able to take part in some of the days aerial armed services events. At midday bang on schedule unlike the parade of military forces which was forty minutes delayed for some unexplained reason, the Red Arrows carried out a flypast over the Parliament from the East Coast across the top of Edinburgh Castle towards Leith. The flypast was sponsered by Selex Galileo. Fifteen minutes later, the crowds were treated to an exciting flypast by the Battle of Britian Memorial Flight which included a Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane well known from the ...

A day in the life of some military dogs and their handlers

A team of two Army dog handlers are working together to provide security for British forces in Helmand Province by searching vehicles entering ISAF bases for weapons and explosives. Lance Corporal Sophie Mitchell (27) and Private Kathleen Griffiths (21) are working with search dogs Flake and Trough, and protection dog Vinco at Main Operating Base (MOB) Price providing vital protection to the UK, ISAF and Afghan troops who operate in the Nahr-e Saraj area of Helmand province. While Kathleen keeps watch over the area with protection dog Vinco, a five year old German Shepherd, Sophie controls search dogs Fluke and Trough, both three year old spaniels as they search trucks and cars looking to gain access to the base. Both handlers have been out in Afghanistan for about a month, while the dogs have a much broader range of experience. Fluke came out to Helmand with Sophie, so is still settling in, while Vinco has been in Afghanistan for a year already.
