Volzhskaya Bolgariya The word Bolgar or Bulgar, on ancient turkic means "rebelled". Some tribes referred to this name which have appeared on the territory of modern Qazaqstan approximately in the fourth century AD Firstly these turkic-speaking tribes were under the protectorate of the Huns (Xiongnu) . But with time the ugrians and bulgars have left their ancient dwellings near the river Volga and Ural mountains & have taken the coasts of the Azov & Black Seas and Tavrida. In the end of 5th century they already occupied lands from borders of the Byzantium empire in a lower reaches of Dunay up to Volga and foothills of Caucasus. The danger for bulgars has come from the east. Turks moving from Altai mountains have conquered a lot of tribes, have found a powerful state-Khaganate and finally have conquered some bulgar tribes in the northern Caucasus. While doing so the conquerors have displaced the avars, all these circumstances gave a chance to khazars and to bolgar-annaguns to amplify on these territories, who lived on east of Azov Sea. In the 7th century the bulgarian lord Kubrat have found his own state, The Great Bolgariya, territory was spreaded from Kuban to Dnepr. In 665 Kubrat dies. His sons didn't listen to fathers wise advice & have separated from each other. From Josh Horowitz's essay on the klezmer accordion (available on the Budowitz website): "Misha Demitro Tsiganoff was born on 15 January 1889, in Odessa, the son of Yanchie Demitro Tsiganoff and Vorgja Nickolarna, and died in February of 1967. He lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan, was Christian and spoke fluent Yiddish. [...] Tsiganoff began his recording career in New York in 1919 and made his last solo record ten years later in 1929. In the 1930s he was billed as "The Gypsy Accordionist" on Philadelphia radio WPEN. He performed frequently with Molly Picon, the Pincus Sisters, David Medoff and Moishe Oysher, among others." Base melody used by Ziggy Elman in 1938 for his recording of "Freylach in Swing" and in 1939 in the hit song AND THE ANGELS SING , music by Ziggy Elman, Lyrics by Johnny Mercer, and recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra. From the archives of yiddish music, the 1918 recording of DER SHTILLER BULGAR, by Abe Schwartz and the Jewish Orchestra. The chassidic melody that served as the basic melody to the 1938 recording by Ziggy Elman, FREYLECH IN SWING and the 1939 #1 top of the hit parade song AND THE ANGELS SING with english lyrics by the great Johnny Mercer, and the fabulous recording by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra with a vocal by Martha Tilton and a trumpet solo by Ziggy Elman. It was sheer genius on the part of Ziggy Elman to convert a chassidic melody into a swing number of the Big Band era. About 19 years ago High Mufti Sheikh-ul-Islam Talgat Tajuddin laid the tradition of the meeting on the Holy land of Bolghar every year in the beginning of June. The ancestors of modern tatars who currently live in the Volga-Ural region of Russia ,the Bolghars, settled in the middle Volga and lower Kama region during the first half of the eighth century. It is believed that Islam spread among them in the ninth century, and there is clear evidence that Islam was recognized as an official religion of the Bolghar Kingdom in 922 CE.
