Butoh

(from HP : www.motimarubutohdance.com) Shirokurochan (premier in Venezia Biennale 2010) This performance is conceived as a myth with the wish that its universal theme can be adapted to the different cultures and believes. The idea and the title in Japanese is influenced by a Japanese Comics titled "Tekkonkinkreet". Like in Taoism conception of Ying and Yang, the two bodies on the stage are creatures that represent the two contradicted elements of the Universe: Good and Evil, woman and man, angel and devil. Wishing that in their distance (間) there will be always the balance, the difference, coexisting in the infinity of love. Description of the scenes Scene 1 (the angel) The costume and the technique is the mixture of the West and the East. The big rose come from the classical romanticism of Italian culture. But the way to place this flower in the space come from the concept of Ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement which is not to show only the flower, but to create the space itself by placing flower. Genesis : The movements and postures come from the dancer's experience of a car accident that put her in the risk of death. In that moment she realized that the body, which is apparently motionless, is a container of memory, which expands and shrinks itself by virtue of rhythm made of broken discontinuous moments. And she also found that moving without harmonic rhythm make the space around bigger. Scene 2 (the devil) The costume and the idea of technique are influenced by ...

Butoh - Piercing the Mask - Screener

Film distributed by Contemporary Arts Media www.artfilms.com.au Piercing the Mask In the early 1960s Butoh dance exploded onto the Japanese stage. The shockwaves ripped the Japanese dance community apart and shattered stereotypical images of the Japanese people. Sexy, violent, humorous and nihilistic, Butoh confronted Japanese society, ridiculing and mocking traditional conventions of beauty and behaviour. This documentary pierces the mystery and mystique of a dance movement adored by the West and largely ignored by the Japanese. It uses archival and modern footage of leading Butoh performers - Dairakudakan, Hakutobo, Kazuo Ono - and interviews with Butoh specialists to throw light on the essential Butoh themes of darkness, violence and eroticism to get to the core of the nature of Butoh. Going beyond its examination of society. It portrays Butoh as a primal scream, uttered at a time when the post-war invasion of Japan by Western cultural and social conventions forced artists to re-invent their own identity. It raises questions about the Japanese people by revealing connections between some of the darker aspects of Butoh and Japanese culture. It examines Butoh's relationship to contemporary life against the MASK is a provocative and entertaining insight into a dance, a culture and a people. Japanese dialogue, English subtitles

On Butoh-based Dance- A Saturday morning amble...

Videopoetry webpage with descriptions: www.brendaclews.com Discussing Butoh-based dance having just completed a 4 day workshop with Denise Fujiwara in Toronto, Canada. My first video, using the in-built webcam on an iMac with iMovie, on Butoh-based dance with a poem in my white flannel nightgown this morning. Even before coffee. I leave as is. Though I did add the poem later this evening and you might have to increase the volume since, though I re-recorded a number of times much closer to the computer's built-in microphone than the original clip, I wasn't able to arrive at the same volume levels. In the emptiness of the dancer everything comes to be. I hope I imparted this in my little experimental video. Sharing a recent experience which I am in the process of understanding. Strange and surreal as it appears, the intensity of the dancers, intimacy, exposure, vulnerability are the core of Butoh.
