Cheb Hasni Biography Cheb Hasni (born Hasni Chekroun on February 1, 1968 in Oran, Algeria, died September 29, 1994) was a performer of Algerian Raï music. He is popular across North Africa, having reached the height of his career in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was the son of a welder and grew up in a working class family where he was one of seven children. Hasni is most well known for his love songs, but he also dealt with taboo subjects such as divorce and alcohol. Beginning of Career Cheb Hasni was interested in performing from an early age. In an interview published in the French newspaper Libération in 1992, Hasni recounted how everyone knew me in our neighbourhood when I was a kid. I was always walking up the road with my school bag thrown off my shoulder, singing my head off. Hasni was also talented in football and a good student, but these traits were overshadowed by his musical interests. Hasnis first significant performance as a singer occurred when he attended a local wedding party, where the group led by the famous Naoui brothers was playing. Impressed by his voice, they invited him to perform on stage at a well-known cabaret, La Guinguette. The second major launching point in Hasnis career came shortly afterwards when a producer asked him to record with Raï performer Chaba Zahouania. During the summer of 1987 the pair recorded a provocative song by Algerian standards, Beraka (The Shack), gaining them much attention. The subjects of his songs were <b>...</b>

Cheb i Sabbah (formerly known as DJ Cheb i Sabbah), born Haim Sérge El Baaz in Constantine, Algeria, is a club DJ. He is a Jew of Berber (Amazigh) descent. He moved to Paris in the 1960s, and, more or less by accident, became a club DJ. His complex cultural background may have prompted him to mix musical styles. By the late 1980s, he was pushing boundaries on the dance floor, seeking ways to work African, Asian, and Arabic music into the mix; using instruments such as the doumbek, sarangi, harmonium, oud, violin, and mrindangam. Then, as the world fusion music movement unfolded, Cheb i Sabbah began recording traditional and classical musicians himself and used those tracks to create his own works. Sabbah's music has been remixed by Karsh Kale, Transglobal Underground, Loop Guru, Junkie XL, and Bassnectar.

The Track "Kese Kese" is taken from the sampler album "Asian Travels" (2000, Label Six Degrees Records). It is remixed by Algeria-born and San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah and was originally published 1999 by Six Degrees Records album "Shri Durga". (Infos from Internet) "The producer/promoter of a now defunct world music series, 1002 Nights, Sabbah presented a diverse range of musicians including Pakistani Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and London-based Bhangra group, Bally Sagoo. With a DJ career spanning three decades. Born in Algeria, a great source of his inspiration were his two uncles who were masters of the Malouf style, also known as Andalusian music. Cheb I describes himself as a 'hajji', a musical pilgrim of the spirit. His name is another reference to his pilgrimage: Cheb is a nickname used by Algerian rai singers; Sabbah means 'morning', but the link is actually to Hassan I Sabbah, the Persian mystic whose legendary library is rumoured to be the largest in the world."
