Exploration of art as a commodity

Conference paper by John Mitchell. "Modern art is based on profit potential rather than expression of free ideas and communication. Therefore the commodification of art has rendered the message contained within to be obsolete." With comments from Alan Woods, editor of the In Defence of Marxism website www.marxist.com. Re: Consumerism, Commodities, Life of the Mind

DAVID LOY, Besl Professor of Ethics, Religion and Society, Xavier University Buddhist philosopher David Loy recently moved from the faculty of International Studies at Bunkyo University in Japan to Xavier University in Ohio. His 1997 article, The Religion of the Market, sparked an ongoing discussion about the nature of consumer capitalism which, he claims, is the first truly world religion, binding all corners of the globe more and more tightly into a worldview and set of values whose religious role we overlook only because we insist upon seeing them as secular. His books include A Buddhist History of the West, Lack and Transcendence, The Great Awakening: A Buddhist Social Theory, and Money, Sex, War, Karma: Notes for a Buddhist Revolution.

"If Art Is A Commodity... : ~~~ PTNs" 2004 (Flash Animation, conceptual)

PTNs Bank Notes Series, by Petronio Bendito. This kinetic bank note in the series is a computer rendered animation that changes its value at a rate of 30 frames per second. Here Rodin's "Thinker" and the Guggenheim Museum -- NYC are morphed together for their are icons of the franchising state of the art work and cultural institutions. The PTN bank notes series is based on mathematical "art formulas" created to establish a subjective exchange rate and price of the artwork. Exchange rate formulas take into account statistical and factual data based on social, political, and cultural phenomena. The series encompasses both printed and digital bank notes. Works of art that were stylized for this series carry strong commodification associations. For additional information visit www.petroniobendito.com.

Rethinking Virtual Commodification (or, The Virtual Kitchen Sink) by Lori Landay/L1Aura Loire

A virtual home, rented or on one's own land, whether similar to an actual world home or some other kind of space, is not just a simulacra of the familar to make the metaphors of place manifest in a virtual world. It is not just a mirror image, but its own place, a locus of experiences that have occurred there, and are now a part of me. I still do not see the appeal of a virtual kitchen, but I have also spent enough time in the virtual world Second Life now to know that people's uses of commodities are often creative and ludic, providing frames for play and interaction that stimulate the imagination in ways I could barely glimpse a year ago. Maybe that could even include the kitchen sink. The first machinima piece included in The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research, this was published as an Interactive Online Exhibit and Demonstration with accompanying notes in the special issue on Virtual Economies, Virtual Goods and Service Delivery in Virtual Worlds: journals.tdl.org For six months, the machinima was only available in the journal, but now that there is a new issue of the journal out and the machinima is no longer easily found on the front page of the journal site, I am posting it on youtube as well.

Swap-O-Rama-Rama: Don't Commodify, Modify! - 07.19.2007

You might recognize Wendy Tremayne from our Green Acre Series here on RyanIsHungry. Wendy founded Swap-O-Rama-Rama as a way to break out the consumer cycle of shopping for clothes. Utilizing the abundance that just a few people's closets can bare, adding a little creativity with fancy sewing machines and silkscreen artists for custom modifications, Swap-O-Rama-Rama makes recycling clothes fun and social. This particular swap was part of Maker Faire, an event to celebrate makers of all kinds from robot artists to crafters to computer hackers. As Wendy says here: There is no creativity in consumerism...makers don't make good consumers. The less you know, the less you can make, the more you're going to buy. Want to produce a Swap-O-Rama-Rama where you live? You can! Because it's Creative Commons licensed! Contact Wendy through the site and she'll get you started!
