One person was reported dead and numerous boats and harbors suffered damage in the United States after the tsunami triggered by the massive earthquake off Japan swept across the Pacific Ocean at jet speed Friday. The fatality was reported in northern California's Del Norte County, where a 25-year-old man was declared dead Friday afternoon after being swept out to sea off a beach while trying to photograph the tsunami's arrival, said Joey Young, a spokesman for the county's emergency operations center. "We had one person reported missing who has been confirmed dead," Young said. "The Coast Guard has been doing a search for the body, but the oceanic conditions are making it very difficult." The victim's name had not been released late Friday. He had been standing on a sandbar at the mouth of the Klamath River when he was washed away, Young said. Two of his friends were carried off as well, but were able to return safely to shore, he said.

A cut-down and speeded up car journey from Newcastle, via Bellingham, to Whitrope siding on the former Waverley Route. Then a two mile walk along the old trackbed to Riccarton Junction, then back to Whitrope and Newcastle. Riccarton Junction was an isolated railway village, built by the Railway Company. It featured houses, a Station Masters house, a school and teachers house, an engine shed and a branch of the Hawick Co-op on the platform. The station served as the junction between the Waverley Route (Carlisle - Hawick - Edinburgh) and the Border Counties Line (Riccarton - Bellingham - Hexham). There was no road access until the 1960s when a Forestry Commission track was built. Everything came in and out by train. It was possible to take a direct train between Newcastle and Riccarton Junction until October 1956 when the Border Counties Line closed. The Waverley route closed on 6 January 1969. Whitrope siding is the base of the Waverley Route Heritage Association, who are in the process of relaying track between Whitrope tunnel and Riccarton Junction, with a view to running a heritage service. Thank you Govenor Bush and Suzanna Gratia Hupp (born January 1, 1959)[1] is a former Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives, who represented traditionally Democratic District 54 (Bell, Burnet, and Lampasas counties) for ten years from 1997-2007. Hupp is recognized as a leading advocate for the Second Amendment and an individual's right to carry a concealed weapon. She was elected to her first term in 1996 but did not seek a sixth two-year term in 2006. Hupp was reared in Friendswood, a city partly in Harris and Galveston counties. She has an older brother, Allan, and a younger sister, Erika. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso and Texas Chiropractic College, from which she received the doctor of chiropractic degree in 1985. Hupp moved first to Houston to practice chiropractic and then to central Texas in 1987. She owned and operated the Cove Physical Rehab Clinic from 1987 until 2000, when she sold the facility. In 2009, we first discovered populations of Nylanderia pubens, the hairy crazy ant in Hancock County, Mississippi. By the following year, 2010, we had found it in at least 7 sites in Jackson County, MS. This exotic species is thought to be native to South America. Since 2000, it has become widespread in Florida, having been found in at least 20 counties, and in Texas, where it has been reported from 18 counties thus far. More recently, it has been reported from two parishes in Louisiana. For the last few years, this ant has been called by a number of common names including the Caribbean crazy ant, Rasberry crazy ant, and the hairy crazy ant and by differrent scientific names as well such as Paratrechina sp. nr. pubens, Nylanderia sp. nr. pubens, N. sp. nr. fulva, etc. However, specimens from the TX, LA, and MS all appear to be the same species as the one in FL, which is being called Nylanderia pubens, the hairy crazy ant. So, until the name is resolved, I am simply referring to this species as N. pubens, although I recognize that that name could change in the future. Dramatic video footage released on Sunday from three Stow police cruisers involved in a 52.5-mile chase of a stolen dump truck looks as if it could have come from a cop reality television show. The stolen dump truck, which police say was driven Saturday by a 17-year-old suspect through the streets of Stow and the highways of three counties, crashed into police cruisers and private vehicles and headed in reverse down a major road while being pursued by police before spinning and totaling a cruiser. That's before the dump truck got out of Stow and headed down state Route 8 and Interstate 77 through Summit, Stark and Tuscarawas counties, then crashed with a flat tire into a guard rail. In parts of one cruiser's video, various objects, including two bricks and a tarp, are seen being thrown from the dump truck's window. Police also said a fire extinguisher was thrown out of the truck toward a line of police cars from various departments in pursuit on the highway. A Stow teen has been charged in juvenile court with three counts of felonious assault with a weapon (the truck), a count of willfully fleeing and eluding a police officer, driving with a suspended license, three counts of vandalism (of cars) and a count of receiving stolen property.

Bev Perdue declared a state of emergency across North Carolina, as did officials in more than a dozen counties, including Cumberland, Halifax and Wake. The state of emergency begins the process of applying for federal aid and allows utility workers and truckers to work longer hours than usual to help in relief efforts.
