Just as Honda is shifting its sports car line-up from petrol engine to hybrid cars, SPOON SPORTS has been struggling to find a way to tune hybrid cars. SPOON CR-Z is their first tuned hybrid car. Through development, they had found lots of blackboxes in the components related to electric motors, making hybrid car tuning a more difficult task compared to traditional petrol engine cars. So first they have thought of taking off the electric motor and swap the engine to K20, but the conclusion was to leave the electric motor as it is. With no exaggeration, this car was so fast that went over my expectation. The track was a small parking space where low-end torque was needed, and corners pretty tight. This CR-Z had the most stiff springs that perfectly matched the race track road condition, but not quite at all on this bumpy parking space road. So the car was constantly bouncing up and down during most of the time on track, but due to its light-weight, low-heighted body with semi-slick tires, made it go really fast. Compared to Honda S2000 I personally own, I will say the acceleration was even, but this CR-Z was faster at cornering under this specific track layout. Detailed spec is not available for this car, but I assume they did something with both engine and electric motor. Needless to say, the body should weigh less than 1000kg. I am guessing Honda and Mugen are trying to find a way and a potential of CR-Z Type R through this kind of development. In fact, they have made 4 of these CR-Z Race Cars for racing purposes, and I think that is too much an investment if they just want to have fun and entertain people. 2011 Honda CR-Z The CR-Z has a 1.5L 4 Cyl making 122 HP. It's assisted with an electric motor & the gearbox here is a CVT. Sorry but midway thru this video, the battery to my HD Cam died so I had to use my iPod Nano. The CVT here can simulate 7 gear ratios which can be done using the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. But IMO, better off getting the 6 Speed manual version as it will be fun to drive & will feel more natural. Honestly, this is the only Hybrid car I wouldn't mind to own simply because Honda tried to deliver a sporty coupe with a fun factor to it. The manual gearbox which is something non of the other hybrids out there offer, & it's $19K price which isn't too bad. I do wish it were a 4 seater as theres room for it & I would've liked to see some better materials used here & there. But how could I forget, I want an armrest!!!!
