CRKT Carson M21, M18: Excellence Within Limits

OK This knife failed me while undergoing batoning tests. Granted it was probably due to the pivot screw lossening which allowed the liner lock to slip into the pivot area and bend. Lesson learned: despite it's looks it's probably not the best folding "survival knife" out there; use a fixed blade for strength. But beyond that the CRKT M21 and M18 series offer outstanding value for the price paid: high quality AUS8 blade steel, superb finishing on blade and handles, fast flip opening, excellent jimping (a necessity sans thumb ramp), tight lockup (batoning not withstanding), narrow tip configured for proper tip up carry, and overall rugged good looks. Downsides might include heavier carry weights, lack of clip versatility, and somewhat abrupt hollow grinding inhibits slicing performance (compared to several flat ground offerings like the SOG Flash). But for around $40, it's still a heck of a lot of knife and should wear well. Just dont' try to chop a tree down with it! ////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 6 out of 10; M18 shown ($20 price considered): 7.5 out of 10 ///////////////// Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" creativecommons.org

CRKT Drifter: $17 Performer!

Get a great EDC blade for $17? Yes, it's possible. I've covered some other great options in TNP "knife show" but now you can add the excellent CRKT Drifter to the mix. As of 2009, this blade is offered in either a stainless steel framelock or lighter weight G10 version. Featuring a 2.9 inch 8Cr14Mov blade, the knife has proven itself as a good EDC utility knife in my carry. Disappointingly, the out-of-box edge for both knives is embarrassingly dull and it will need some sharpening TLC to bring it to life. But the slight recurve and good belly in the blade shape offer good cutting ability despite perhaps the somewhat thick blade stock. Other upsides include fast deployment, tight lockup, good looks, excellent fit and finish, pillar construction, purposeful jimping, strong pocket clip, and (with the SS version) a very strong lock. Some downsides will include heavier carry weights compared to the competition (3.2 oz SS, 2.4 oz G10) and a non-transferrable pocket clip stuck in the (ugh) tip-down carry configuration. Nevertheless, it's impressive to have two handle options in this affordable little blade and even more impressive that both come in under $20 (subject to change of course!). /////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 7 out of 10

CRKT M16 EDC Compact knife: Featherweight EDC

Carried for a long time, I know the Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) Compact M16 EDC pretty well. And there's a lot to like: light 2.1 oz, fast opening, tight lockup with LAWKS safety, nicely designed clip, attractive finishing, good steel (154CM this one), and priced resonably. It's a tiny carry package that packs a 3" blade. Downsides would be a non-reversible clip, sometimes sticky liner lock, and a limited utility spear point blade for EDC tasks (I prefer more sweep, different blade shape). But at around $50 and at 2.1 oz for this length of blade, it's a still a good EDC choice for most./////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 5 out of 10

CRKT Lake: "$16 of Class" by Nutnfancy

Here's another winning CRKT EDC blade: the Lake 111. Designed by Ron Lake, it provides amazing class and cutting utility for its low price. The 8Cr14Mov clip blade is an excellent and precise cutter, arriving extra sharp from the box. Man that 8Cr14 and 13Mov steel sure can take an edge...almost scary. The tips are strong but precise on these satin finished hollow ground 3.1" blades. As of 2011, this little lockback folder came in two choices of handle materials, both excellent: milled aluminum or basket weave patterned Zytel. The aluminum-handled Lake #7256 is a bit more classy as it features a milled pattern and the added visual interest of brass liners (!). It's a bit heavier at 3.8 ounces than the Zytel-handled #7256Z Lake. I would like to see full skeletonizing of the Lake series to lighten them up. But both have surprisingly rocket fast deployment and solid lockups. You can thank a well though out lock bar, spring, and slick pivot bushings for this. Both knives excel in their slenderness, making them a pure joy to carry in the EDC role. You won't be bumping and scaping into things with the Lake along for the ride. The thumb studs are set into the back blade spine and provide good traction since no handle occlusions exist. The pocket clip is excellent abeit non-positionable to any other corner than where it's at (tip down). The polished finished clip on the Zytel version is exceptional in appearance. Another win is how deep these Lakes carry in the pocket. Value is ...

quick look at the CRKT M21-14SFG. Great looking blade design but very big and bulky to be carried as an EDC knife. Would be a very good backup to a fixed blade knife. Overall I love the feel of the G10 scales. Very comfortable in the hand, but way too bulky in your front pocket.

CRKT Carson M16 Folding Knife - Pure Stab and Slash

When compared with fixed blade knives, folding knives are no match in strength and durability. But folding knives allow portability which, for an EDC, is a major issue. When it comes to carrying a fighting/defensive blade, if you can't carry it, what good is it? In this category, then, of folding tactical knives, enter the CRKT Carson-designed M16 line. They are fast. affordable, lightweight knives, with excellent designs for fighting. This model is my favorite, with its dagger-like spear point blade and small size. It deploys super fast and super tight, with absolutely no blade play. Thanks to a rigid handle and very solid lockup, I feel confident I can fight as hard as I need to with this knife. 8/10

CRKT Shenanigan: "Hawaiian Tactical" by Nutnfancy

This knife is a looker. This aluminum version of the CRKT Shenanigan in many ways looks a lot more expensive than it is. It strikes the appearance of a well-crafted titanium tactical folder. With its 3.25" AUS8 clip blade and its aggressive unsharpened swedge, it seems like it could hold its own in that role as well. The blade arrives with a beautiful and sharp polished edge that slices readily. It is black titanium nitride coated which is handsome. The AUS8 choice is wise. The outstanding milled jimping on the 6061 T6 aluminum handles help traction immensely. These bead blasted and clear coated scales are comfortable with their rubber inserts and have excellent ergos in forward and reverse grips. Expect a little bit of pocket extraction problems as those rubber inserts really grap your pocket under that clip. The clip is somewhat flared out, a Ken Onion design feature that puts it in unision with the organic lines of the Shenanigan. Unfortunately it forces tip down carry at one position only. Lefties will not dig this so much. Speed of deployment and lockup in this Onion- designed flipper with its bronze bushings is outstanding. The strip lock on the milled alum. handle may look a little thin but it seems plenty strong enough for EDC use. Value is excellent at around $50; you definitely will think you are getting a more expensive knife. The Shenanigan is also available in a Zytel frame and in combo edges (however I do not care for the rough serrations in this model ...

CRKT McGinnis Shrimp Keychain Knife CR1181

You could think of the CRKT Shrimp as a big key chain knife, but it's really a small rugged utility folder that glows in the dark. The category of "key chain knives" has been around for a long time. In most cases, these are little pen knives, with thin blades and slip joint pocket knife frames. Gerry McGinnis had a radically innovative idea, which is why this knife is in the Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) catalog. He calls it the Shrimp. The revolutionary idea is this: make a small knife with premium quality materials and big knife build. The Shrimp is not a toy, but a real sport and work knife. The only difference is that it has a 1.75" blade and a 2.5" handle. Take the blade, for example. It is made of premium 8Cr13MoV stainless steel in a high satin finish. Although short, it is fully featured, with a modified drop point shape with recurve. It is high hollow ground and has a slight swedge on the top edge. It is opened by a large CNC-milled nail notch. There are aggressive friction grooves on the spine for the thumb. But most impressively, the blade is a full 0.125" (3.2 mm) thick, a width common on much larger folders. The Shrimp has a frame-lock build, eliminating the need for separate liners. The right side frame is 3Cr13 stainless steel on all models. The left frame is 6061 anodized aluminum on the colored models, and stainless steel on the bead-blast model 1181. The left frame is skeletonized to save weight. To aid grip, there are two finger choils and the ...

CRKT Ignitor: "Fires It Up" by Nutnfancy

This is another fun knife to play with. With its lightning quick "Outburst" assist mechanism, the CRKT Ignitor flies into action. It also features a unique through-the-thumbstud actuation that is reliable. Situated for right side actuation, lefties may find this "Fire Safe" thumbstud lacking some versatility since it cannot be reversed. The 3.4" spear point blade is hollow ground and can be brought to wicked sharp levels with little work but does not arrive that way (my samples). The blade has some belly and an accurate tip but lacks jimping or a thumb ramp. The G10 handle scales are medium traction, milled for aesthetics, and are handsome. Two colorations were offered at time of review: black and green G10, polished clip and blade or the "Black T" all black version with cool dark dray Titanium Nitride blade coating, black clip. Hopefully you like the the clip orientation because there it will stay in its tip up orientation; it is not re-positionable to any other corner. Weight is adequate at 3.8 oz and some of it can be attributed to the non-skeletonized liners. Value is high if you score it for the prices discussed and that makes up for some of these minor downsides. Overall it is a durable, fun, and useful EDC blade that will serve well.//////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 7.5 out of 10

CRKT Carson M4 knife: "HD EDC" by Nutnfancy

A heavy duty EDC knife or maybe tactical folder, the CRKT Carson M4 looks to be a strong knife. With its AutoLAWKS feature, the blade is automatically locked into the open position which should preclude inadvertent closure. It does tend to become obnoxious in use however (as it makes closing tedious and it most uses isn't needed anyhow). The hollow ground, AUS-8 steel drop point blade should offer excellent utility and perhaps some tactical capabilities with its 3.6 length. Deployment with the M4 is fast and smooth with or without its removable-torsion bar (Outburst mechanism) for assisted opening (I prefer it removed in this model, as shown). Downsides would include its 5.2 oz weight, the slick Zytel handle scales and a non-positionable pocket clip (dedicated tip down). But overall this is a handsome and capable blade that will serve admirably if your system can accept the weight.///////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 7.5 out of 10

Review: CRKT Hissatsu - singular purpose fighting knife

A reasonably long (7.125"), curved blade with an extremely abrupt point make the Hissatsu a fine fighting knife. The curve will provide deep, penetrating slashes, and should cause severe cuts. It has a decent grip made of a tacky, well-textured material (kraton, maybe?) - though no hilt, and no pommel. The grind on the spine of the blade makes it a deadly stabbing weapon. Note that it weakens the lateral strength, limiting the tip strength for prying. The sheath holds the knife so securely that it is effective for draw-and-slash. It also offers universal attachment options. The steel is a weak point (440A stainless), but if you limit this to a fighting blade it won't be a problem. It is simply not suitable for survival or utility, as the blade is too narrow and the steel won't hold a fine edge against abrasive or hard surfaces. Great blade design - singular in purpose - and a great carry sheath make this an excellent tactical deployment choice as a last ditch weapon. 7/10.
