Pus discharge occurs in active stage of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) which can be recurrent. Patient usually complaints having ear discomfort, itchiness, or fullness prior to its occurence. The nature of the pus produced is mucoid or sticky due to increased activity of the mucous glands along the middle ear cleft in the presence of infection. Predisposing factors include URTI/flu, entry of water while taking bath or from swimming, and chemical irritation from outside sources eg, body bath, soap, shampoo etc., These will be followed by secondary infection and subsequent pus formation. Treatment includes ear mopping or suctioning of the discharge under microscope view followed by topical eardrops application which contains broad spectrum antibiotics. This video shows an active pus discharge from the middle ear (turbid yellow fluid over deeper ear passage floor) with an inflamed perforation edge. Few prominent superficial vessels can be seen at the vascular strip area superiorly. The eardrum perforation is of moderately large size and centrally located.
