Egyptian police and military forces firing tear gas moved against hundreds of protesters in Cairo on Friday night, trying to push them away from the Israeli embassy. A stand-off between protesters and police followed, with both sides firing firebombs at the each other. The streets of Cairo on January 25. Inspired by the recent ousting of President Ben Ali in Tunisia, Egyptians rally against their aging ruler Hosni Mubarak. Tens of thousands joined demonstrations across the country. The greatest concentration was in Tahrir square, where protests continued for hours until they were violently broken up by state security.

Thousands of protesters in Egypt defied an evening curfew in Cairo on Saturday night, standing their ground in a resounding rejection of President Hosni Mubarak's attempt to hang onto power with promises of reform and a new government. Clashes broke out as police protecting the Interior Ministry near the site opened fire at a funeral procession for a dead protester, possibly because it came too close to the force. Video from the scene showed crowds of protesters running through the streets as tear gas canisters were fired in amongst them. Several young men could later be seen staggering through the streets sporting bloodied wounds. Some of the severely injured were taken to a nearby mosque which was being used as a makeshift medical centre. Cairo appeared to be relatively calm early Sunday as residents reflected after another day and night of protest and political upheaval in the Egyptian capital. Throngs in the sprawling city marched from the huge Tahrir Square in Cairo toward the parliament building, according to CNN reporters on the scene. Demonstrators threw rocks at police and police hurled back rocks. Tear-gas canisters were shot at demonstrators and the protesters threw them back. Protest organizers said they hope to capture the regional momentum for political change set by Tunisians, who 10 days ago forced the collapse of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's 23-year rule. The grievances were foreshadowed after several Egyptians set themselves or attempted to set themselves on fire earlier this month, mirroring the self-immolation of a Tunisian man whose action spurred the uprising there. The Tunisian uprising was the most successful revolt in the region since 1979, but it is anybody's guess whether uprisings will spread to other Arabic-speaking lands.

Hundreds of Egyptians continued to protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Cairo for a second day on Saturday, and have vowed to do so until the Israeli ambassador to Egypt is forced out of his office. Egypt recalled its ambassador from Israel to protest the deaths of at least three Egyptian troops killed in a shootout between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants who had launched a deadly attack on Israel from Egyptian soil. Egypt said on Saturday it was withdrawing its ambassador from Israel pending an investigation by the Jewish state into the border killings, which have raised tensions between the two countries. a protester said, "If Israel thinks that things are like the days of the corrupt regime, when Egyptian soldiers were killed and we were forced to remain quiet, they're wrong; there has been a revolution and I want to tell Israel that one Egyptian soldier is worth 10 Israeli soldiers."
