Dramatic video as thousands clash with Egypt riot police in Cairo

The Egyptian capital Cairo was the scene of violent chaos on Friday, when tens of thousands of anti-government protesters stoned and confronted police, who fired back with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. It was a major escalation in what was already the biggest challenge to authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak's 30 year-rule. They are demanding Mubarak's ouster and venting their rage at years of government neglect of rampant poverty, unemployment and rising food prices. Deadly Attack on Coptic Church Sparks Cairo Riots

10 October, 2011 - The so-called "Arab Spring" took a deadly turn in Cairo over the weekend, as an attack on a Coptic Christian church sparked riots, killing 24 people and wounding at least 200 others. The rioting was worst violence since civilian protests brought about the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in March. Police arrested dozens of people in Cairo's Tahrir Square when clashes between Coptic Christians, Muslims, and security forces escalated out of control. Christians had gathered to demonstrate after Muslims partially demolished a church last week. Some of the leaders of both the Christian and Muslim activists said the clashes were not as much related to religion as they were to the army's handling of the situation. Rioters set cars on fire and burned army vehicles. The army's response was described as brutal by friends of several of the victims, who posted their conditions and video on the Internet. Attacks against Christian churches have increased since Mubarak's ouster. Christians represent just 10 percent of the country's 80 million people. The army has controlled the Egyptian government for the past 40 years. Egyptian leaders held an emergency cabinet meeting to decide how to respond to charges of brutality among their forces. The latest violence has sparked new concerns about the upcoming parliament elections, scheduled for late November.

Egypt's military rulers imposed an overnight curfew on Cairo's Tahrir Square and other parts of the capital, which is due to be lifted around now. It follows a violent eruption between Coptic Christians and security forces that have left at least 24 people dead. What began as a peaceful rally calling for justice over attacks on churches and radicalism, quickly turned into the most-violent episode since February's revolution. Military vehicles are clearly seen charging through crowds and ploughing into people, while army infantry fired rubber bullets and tear gas. Witnesses claim the escalation was sparked by unconnected trouble-makers, but state-owned media blames Christian protesters for instigating the violence. Supporters and opponents of the ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak clashed outside and inside the court building as the trial of the 83-year-old former president continues. Monday's session was temporarily halted after legal advisers for the opposing parties at the trial started a brawl, local media reported. It is not clear yet whether the trial will resume. Mubarak is charged with corruption and complicity in the killing of protestors during the February uprising that toppled him. Standing in the dock along with him are two of his sons and a senior aide. Four policemen are to testify against Mubarak on Monday. The session is the third round of court hearings after proceedings were delayed on August 15. There's been fresh unrest in Cairo where at least 50 protesters have been injured in clashes with police. Dozens were also injured on Tuesday as hundreds of protesters took first to the Interior Ministry, and then shifted to Tahrir square, the epicentre of the revolution in February. Protesters are angry about the slow process of prosecuting security officers, accused of causing the deaths of more than 800 people, during the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.
