Rimsky Korsakov - Capriccio Espagnol Op 34 - Berliner Phil (Dir.Zubin Mehta)

Rimsky Korsakov - Capricho Español Op 34 - Berliner Phil (Dir.Zubin Mehta) Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (18 March 1844-- 21 June1908), was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration. Mainly known for his symphonic works, especially the popular symphonic suite Sheherazade, as well as the Capriccio Espagnol and the Russian Easter Festival Overture, Rimsky-Korsakov left an oeuvre that also included operas, chamber works, and songs. Rimsky-Korsakov's music is accessible and engaging owing to his talent for tone-coloring and brilliant orchestration. Furthermore, his operas are masterful musical evocations of myths and legends.

Roselín Pabón: Director / Conductor Written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1887. The work has five movements. The first movement, Alborada, is a festive and exciting dance, typical from traditional asturian music to celebrate the rising of the sun. The second movement, Variazioni, begins with a melody in the horn section. Variations of this melody are then repeated by other instruments and sections of the orchestra. The third movement, Alborada, presents the same asturian dance as the first movement. The two movements are nearly identical, in fact, except that this movement has a different instrumentation and key. The fourth movement, Scena e canto gitano ("Scene and gypsy song") opens with five cadenzas — first by the horns and trumpets, then solo violin, flute, clarinet, and harp — played over rolls on various percussion instruments. It is then followed by a dance in triple time leading attacca into the final movement. The fifth and final movement, Fandango asturiano, is also an energetic dance from the Asturias region of northern Spain. The piece ends with an even more rousing statement of the Alborada theme. A complete performance of the Capriccio takes around 16 minutes. www.myspace.com

TCHAIKOVSKY: The Capriccio Italien, Op. 45

Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) Excerpts from The Capriccio Italien, op. 45 is a fantasy for orchestra composed between January and May of 1880 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Capriccio was inspired by a trip Tchaikovsky took to Rome, during which he saw the Carnival in full swing, and is reminiscent of Italian folk music and street songs. As these elements are treated rather freely initially he intended this piece to be called Italian Fantasy. Tchaikovsky even uses as the introduction a bugle call that he overheard from his hotel played by Italian cavalry regiment. Another source of inspiration for this piece are Mikhail Glinka's Spanish Pieces. The premiere was held in Moscow on December 18 of the same year; the orchestra was led by Nikolai Rubinstein. Although Tchaikovsky wrote to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck that the work would be successful (the piece was praised by most critics)he admitted that it was not very well composed. Dedicated to Karl Davidov, the Capriccio was later arranged by the composer for 4-hand piano. A typical performance lasts for around 15 minutes. Gundula Janowtiz, soprano. Karl Böhm, conductor. [English translation} (Countess Madeleine singing from the sonnet to which music has been added:) ""Your image in my ardent bosom glows, Enthroned there to keep my heart on fire; Where you reside, there dwells my sole desire; In vain would Venus beckon if she chose. What joy, what pain your gentle eye bestows; Indeed, one gaze can wild despair inspire; The next restore my fondest hope entire. Your glances deal me life or mortal blows."" In vain do I try to keep them apart, for words and music are blended together to form a single creation. Mysterious experience, finding one art restored by the other. ""Were yet my days prolonged beyond all measure, No other being's favour would I treasure, No other passion can compel my heart. All through the waking hours my thoughts enfold; All night my slumbering eyes in dreams behold; Thus shall it be till from this earth I part."" How their love is rising to meet me, tenderly woven of verses and music. How can I tear this delicate fabric? Am I myself not part of its texture? To make a decision? For Flamand, the noble spirit with the ardent glance, for Olivier, the stalwart soul. the impassioned man? Well, dearest Madeleine, what says your heart? Ah, you are loved, but whom do you love now? Mozart: Capriccio KV 395 / 300g (Ronald Brautigam)

This is a very rare little gem, wonderfully performed by Ronald Brautigam on fortepiano. The "Four Praeambula in C major KV 284a" were long believed lost. However, a manuscript for a certain untitled piece referred to as Capriccio KV 395/300g existed, and in the Neue Mozartausgabe, published in 1982, Wolfgang Plath proved the the Praeambula and Capriccio were the same piece. The piece was earlier known as "Little C major Fantasy", and it got the name "Capriccio" during the middle of the 20th century. The correct name today should of course be "Prealudium in C major KV 284a". The Capriccio (as I prefer to call it since it is better known by that name) was written in 1777 at the request of Mozart's sister Nannerl, who wanted a "short praeambolum" to assist her in her studies. Nannerl also specified that she wanted the piece to modulate from C major to B flat major.
