Another trip into the tape vault uncovered this 8mm footage I shot while sitting in on the 1998 fall meet of the Central Carolina Live Steamers at their track in Apex, NC. This was done both freehand and on a REALLY cheap tripod, so apologies in advance for the shaky camera work. I was in awe of the track work and the overall layout involved here (and envious of the gentleman whose house sat in the center of it all!). I did not have the foresight at the time to film more of the layout, so what I got only scratched the surface. The track wound behind the house and into woods, where it looped back over itself on a wooden trestle. Coming out of the woods, the line came across the front lawn and snaked around and across the driveway - complete with working signals. The track then curved back around the house and across another driveway before going under the trees and through a landscaped area over a small ornamental fish pond, and then back to the area behind the house where they loaded people for rides. On a later trip, the club had added a working water tower to the yard, using a buried garden hose to fill the tank and a toilet plunger mechanism inside to allow the tank to automatically top itself off. The yard included a roundhouse and turntable, and a shop area where several engines were lined up on waist height 'drop tables' for maintenance. Locomotives, cars, and speeders of all types took laps around the track in a constant parade all day long. Some of the locomotives <b>...</b>

At least five people are injured, and officials are surveying damage as a tornado struck the Charlotte area, and strong storms hit other parts of North Carolina. A spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety says five people in Mecklenburg County suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched in the county early Saturday. The storm struck across parts of northeast Mecklenburg and southern Cabarrus counties, knocking down trees and pulling roofs off homes. Duke Energy reports more than 1300 without power in those two counties. In western North Carolina, a Cherokee County spokesman says homes and businesses suffered major and minor damage, including some in the town of Murphy, from a storm that came through Friday night. No injuries or fatalities are reported.
