Australia halts cattle supply to Indonesia abattoirs Posted: 31 May 2011 0434 hrs SYDNEY: Australia has moved to halt the supply of live cattle to three Indonesian abattoirs after a documentary on Monday revealed evidence of cruelty against animals shipped there for slaughter. The ABC's "Four Corners" programme - to be aired later Monday - said it had footage of cattle suffering, including having their eyes gouged, tails broken and throats hacked in four slaughterhouses in Indonesia. After viewing the footage, the Australian livestock export industry body LiveCorp said it had asked the Indonesian industry to stop supplying Australian cattle to three of these facilities. "Cruelty to Australian animals is simply unacceptable," LiveCorp chief executive Cameron Hall said in a statement. "This graphic and distressing footage has upset and frustrated the industry, particularly given our major efforts to improve animal welfare in Indonesia." LiveCorp said it would provide additional training to workers at the fourth abattoir to improve conditions. "Our animal welfare strategy is focused on ensuring our cattle are only supplied to facilities where supply chains meet or exceed global animal welfare standards," Hall said. The head of animal welfare at Indonesia's agriculture ministry, Sri Mukartini, said she had heard about the Australian documentary but would not comment on specific incidents. The Australian government says it has suspended all cattle exports to neighbouring Indonesia after an outcry over abusive treatment of the livestock in the country. Joe Ludwig, Austrialia's agriculture minister, said on Wednesday that the suspension would remain until Indonesia establishes new regulations to protect the livestock from mistreatment. Many Australians are outraged and are calling for a total ban on live cattle exports. Please be warned, some footage in the following story is graphic. The Australian live cattle export industry is in turmoil after graphic footage of animal cruelty in Indonesian abattoirs has been released. The footage shows cattle suffering inhumane torture before being slaughtered. The RSPCA along with Animals Australia released the footage, saying the Live Export Industry was aware of the abuses, but did not act when they were exposed. Lisa Chalk of the RSPCA said, quote: "Live Corp and Meat and Livestock Australia are completely aware of their culpability in animal cruelty in Indonesia." Slim Whitman (born January 20, 1924 in Tampa, Florida) is an American country music singer and songwriter. Whitman lives in Middleburg, Florida Born Otis Dewey Whitman, Jr., he is one of the best-selling and most influential artists in country music history and yet at the same time is one of the most unrecognized by the American public at large. Growing up, Whitman liked the country music of Jimmie Rodgers that he was hearing on the radio but did not embark on a musical career until the end of World War II after he had served in the South Pacific with the United States Navy. Whitman is a self taught left-handed guitarist. Whitman is right-handed, but he lost almost all of the second finger on his left hand in an accident. Otis Whitman worked at a shipyard in Tampa while developing a musical career, eventually performing with a band known as the "Variety Rhythm Boys". Whitman's first big break came when agent Colonel Tom Parker heard him singing on the radio and offered to represent him. Signed with RCA Records, he was billed as the cowboy singer, "Slim Whitman" and released his first single in 1948. This may be the first view of Texas longhorn cattle in fighting and mating behavior. They are docile and don't fight much. The Texas Longhorn is a type of cattle known for its huge horns. The longest horn on record is over 9 feet. They are colorful. Longhorns can weight up to 2500 lbs, Cattle, cows, bulls, are the most common type of large domesticated ungulates. They are members of the subfamily Bovinae and are the most widespread species of the genus Bos. They are raised as livestock for meat, as dairy animals for milk and other dairy products, as draft animals (pulling carts, plows and the like), for leather and dung for manure or fuel. We watched them for over an hour as they munched and clambered through the vegetation. They were so preoccupied with feeding that they didn't seem to care who or what was nearby - and why should they. One female in particular seemed very relaxed in my presence so I was confident that I could get fairly close without alarming or spooking her. It was a real pleasure to feel the breath of this wondrous animal on my face before she finally sauntered off and disappeared into the forest. Wild Gaur can be very dangerous animals and I wouldn't usually get this close - especially if they are with a calf or if it's breeding season, and I certainly would never attempt to get this close to one of those powerful males. By all accounts they can be quite moody! The Gaur is a large, dark-coated forest animal of South Asia and Southeast Asia. It's the largest species of wild cattle in the world, bigger than the African buffalo, the extinct aurochs, wild water buffalo or bison.
