GIANT CECROPIA MOTHS ON CACOON (07.06.21) 1

Wild Cecropia moths. One emerged on the first day of summer. One moth had just emerged from its cocoon (shown) and was still hanging on it (07.06.21), when another came in to mate. Cecropia moths are very rare here, so that it is amazing that another one found it. The male has a bushier antenna with a yellow tip. The female appears larger and has a much larger thicker abdomen. They are the largest North American moth and can have a wingspan of 6 inches. They belong to the family Saturniidae and can be referred to as silkworm moths. The female emits a pheromone that a male can smell (with his antenna) a mile or more away. The mated pair will stay together for a day or so.

Its long proboscis, hovering behavior, and audible humming noise, make it look remarkably like a hummingbird while feeding on flowers. This resemblance is thought to result from convergent evolution. It flies during the day, likes bright sunshine, but also at dusk, dawn, and even in the rain, which is unusual for even diurnal hawkmoths. Its has been shown to have a relatively good ability to learn colours *** The cecropia are the largest North American moth and can have a wingspan of 6 inches. Big bugs! Cecropia Moth.

I see these quite often, among other huge bugs that roam the ground and skies. This guy has been perched for over 24 hours. I like the fact he didn't freak out, but rather flexed his wings when I got too close.
