Charles Barkley announces his retirement at the beginning of the 1999-2000 NBA season. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- This time he means it. No joke. Charles Barkley even had a halftime ceremony before the hometown fans at Sunday night's Houston Rockets-Detroit Pistons exhibition game to prove it. This season, his 16th in the NBA, will be his last. Barkley, who has teased fans a number of times in recent years with the threat of calling it quits, formally announced his pending retirement in the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, just a half-hour drive from his hometown of Leeds. With his trademark flourish, he announced he would give $1 million each to alma maters Leeds High School and Auburn University and to a program for inner-city Birmingham youth called Cornerstone Schools. "I don't think God gave me this gift so I could play basketball and have $50 million in the bank and live happily ever after," Barkley, 36, said. "I don't think that's what my life is for. "I made up my mind that I was going to retire last season," Barkley, 36, told the crowd at halftime. "A reporter asked me, 'You have athletes making absurd amounts of money but why aren't they doing great things with it?' It really annoyed me, because it was true." Charles Wade Barkley (born February 20, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player. Nicknamed "Sir Charles," for his aggressive and outspoken demeanor, and "The Round Mound of Rebound," for his unusual build and talent as a player, Barkley established himself as one of the National Basketball Association's most dominating power forwards.
