Powers of Ten
Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only asa speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. this is a split eames-style screen comparison of two classic charles eames directed film montages, produced 14 years apart. in comparing the key eames image scenes of the manufacturing of products, between the classic mgm hollywood film - "the spirit of st. louis" in which charles filmed the plane assembly montage, and the 1970 eames office film - "fiberglass chairs", we see the eames office love for certain imagery....the mgm film is the one on the left and fiberglass chair is the one on the right. for more information on this eames moment, please see my vintage design website. www.eamescollector.com

charles eames' bow tie
one of the 100, one-minute films i've made about lost or forgotten eames moments. this is a still life image movie of the many moods of the eames bow tie, the film ends with a rare look at the original sketch of charles' bow tie as designed by ray eames. this drawing had been sent off to a seamstress in nyc, who handmade the ties for ray and charles.... for more information on this eames moment, please see my vintage design website. www.eamescollector.com

Tout a commencé le 17 juin 1907, jour de la naissance de Charles Ormond Eames, junior,que nous appellerons , en toute intimité, Charles Eames. Charles étudia l'architecture pendant deux ans, à L'Université de Washington à Saint Louis, avant de partir, en 1929, visiter l'Europe. Là-bas, il fera la connaissance de Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe et Le Corbusier. Toujours pendant cette période Charles Eames va collaborer avec l'architecte Eliel Saarinen, et c'est d'ailleurs avec le fils de ce dernier, Eero Saarinen que Charles Eames remportera le premier prix d'un concours de création de design organique organisé par le MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) de New York. Une dizaine d'année plus tard, sur l'invitation d'Eliel Saarinen, Charles étudiera l'architecture à l'Académie des Arts de Cranbrook dans le Michigan. Où il deviendra rapidement professeur de design industriel. C'est dans cette université que Charles Eames va rencontrer Ray Bernice Alexandra Kaiser. Ray Kaiser est étudiante en peinture abstraite de 1933 à 1939. Ray est née le 15 décembre 1912 à Sacramento. En 1941, Charles et Ray se marient. Ray assistera Charles dans beaucoup de ses travaux. Charles et Ray Eames s'installent à Venice en Californie. Daniel Ostroff, producer and editor of the new Eames Office website eamesdesigns.com, talks about a pavilion designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the 1964 NYWF IBM Pavilion. Charles was a trained architect, who built five houses and two and one half churches before he met Ray. Ray Eames was a trained painter, who studied for six years with Hans Hoffman in New York City. This 1964 New York Worlds Fair IBM pavilion, the only one left in private hands, and which shows the great synergy in their work, is on display at COLLECTING EAMES THE JF CHEN COLLECTION, a Getty/Pacific Standard Time Participating Gallery exhibition through January 14, 2012.
