Charlie performed this piece as the 3rd piece of the solo recital for his school. I would say he scored a 90+% on this performance compared to his top form. Despite the occasional double notes on octave chords too difficult for his hands, the performance was musical and exciting and that's what matters for any music!
Charlie learned the piece by himself as his teacher refused to teach him the piece due to its incredible demand on physical/technical ability AND musicality being too much for a 9yo to learn. But the piece has been on Charlie's wishlist for so long, he wanted to give it a try. This is first try for recoding on this beautiful piece.

Charlie Liu (charlie-liu.com ) had fun playing it in a 6-piece solo recital for an Elementary School when he's 6, and they thoroughly enjoyed it! We forgot the pedal extension & they didn't have adjustable bench, so Charlie was sitting on 2 phonebooks, tiptoeing another while pedaling, quite a balancing job there.
Charlie Liu (9) plays the beautiful Chopin "Raindrop" prelude. His teacher only instructed him on the start of the piece. We recorded before she had a chance to listen to the whole piece, so there was some mistake in the piece, although it does not affect the musicality at all.

This is a video of Anna, Charlie, and my rehearsal with Lang Lang in California, playing "Fantasy on Themes from Bizet's Carmen" by Mack Wilberg, for two pianos and eight hands. It was recorded just before the "Lang Lang and Friends" concert on November 3, which we also performed with Ms. Jingyi Zhang at Carnegie Hall on October 27. We had a lot of fun playing this piece; Lang Lang was phenomenal and his passion for music is contagious. He is such an inspiration to us all! Charlie Liu (10) gave me the best Father's Day gift ever this morning - his first ever music composition! While he never took any formal or informal composition or music theory lesson and never showed interest in composition, I did wish for him to try composing in the future. What a pleasant surprise he gave me! He really kept this secret well! I'm sure a music theorist could pick the piece apart, but for a 1st attempt, I thought he did truly great, with touching and catchy melody and enjoyable complexity. The scholars from the Lang Lang Foundation, Anna Larsen, Derek Wang, and Charlie Liu met again at Carnegie Hall in the Lang Lang & Friends Concert. They played this arrangement of Carmen by Mack Wilberg along with Jingyi Zhang. Derek and Anna are on piano 1, Derek on primo and Anna on secondo. Jingyi and Charlie are on piano 2, Jingyi on primo and Charlie on secondo. They took a blistering tempo. I apologize for the camera work, the seats were far back, and this is very amateur recording quality. It was the best we could do! They will be doing a second concert on November 3rd in Los Angeles, CA. Hopefully, we will get a better quality recording there!

This is the only new piece Charlie learned for the last month. It's clean and musical, but sadly our camcorder malfunctioned and cut the beginning few seconds off (we do have an audio-only version recorded using a USB microphone).
This is a good recording of this beautiful piece composed by Paul Senneville (performed and popularized by Richard Clayderman) despite that Charlie only spent 5-6 hrs on his own to learn the piece. He missed a short repeat at the end of the piece but it's not affecting much. BTW, Charlie's turning 8 soon!
