Press Release: Saving children in southern Somalia must be first priority More than a million children in need of life-saving interventions NAIROBI, 29 July 2011 - With an estimated 1.25 million children across Southern Somalia in urgent need of life saving interventions and 640000 acutely malnourished, UNICEF called for all actors to make saving children's lives the top priority, and to urgently support all efforts to reach children in need. "The children of Southern Somalia desperately need our help. Too many of them have already died and many others are at great risk unless we act now," said Rozanne Chorlton, UNICEF Somalia Representative. "Families shouldn't have to leave their homes... mothers and their children shouldn't have to endure days of perilous journey in search of food and water, and then face a life of uncertainty in a camp." "All our energy should be focused on saving lives." To reach children as quickly as possible, UNICEF, along with its partners, has mounted a massive scale up of its operation and is using all avenues available to get supplies into the region. So far this month, the child rights' agency has brought in enough supplementary feeding supplies for 65000 children in the drought affected regions of Southern Somalia. These supplies are being distributed by partners on the ground. I taped some of the morning before the surgery to show her and was already planning to tape afterwards. He had just had a tooth removed due to Hyperdontia or extra tooth. This was taken in the parking lot of the dentist office. He was so out of it. The staff was even laughing. This lasted for a few hours and he was fine. He even laughed at the video that night. He is very smart and always has something interesting to say about many different issues. His philosophical reaction to the medication didnt really suprise us. David is a very good kid and I am blessed to have he and his brother William as sons. This has been a great experience for our family. Thanks for watching. Meggie Zahneis' story in her own words: "Hi, I'm Meggie, and I'm 14 years old. I was born with a very rare disorder called HSAN II (Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy, type 2). There's only about 50 people diagnosed worldwide with this disorder. Basically, HSAN II means I don't feel pain, temperature and touch to the same degree as everyone else. I don't have reflexes either, but I do have hypothermia and hearing loss. It can be very challenging at times, since I have to be treated mainly based on symptoms. That's where Cincinnati Children's has been such a valuable resource for me and my family, especially since it is both close to us and offers all the specialists I need. At one point or another, I've visited just about every department at Cincinnati Children's. In fact, I spent my first 38 days in the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) at Cincinnati Children's and have been at one campus or another pretty much every week since. That's why I want to thank Cincinnati Children's. Everyone I see there — from the doctors, nurses, and therapists to the receptionists that check me in — has been absolutely wonderful. What I appreciate most of all is that they listen to me and answer my questions, not just my parents', and make me feel comfortable in situations that often aren't comfortable.
