The Nilahue and GolGol rivers near the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano are set to burst its banks after its flow increased from 30 cubic meters per second to 160 cubic meters per second. In towns bordering the fiery mount, authorities have warned of imminent flooding after 3500 residents were evacuated. While 500 of them were still in shelters, authorities seek legal permission to evacuate a dozen more who refused to leave their property and animals behind. The weather has forced many planes in South America to remain grounded for a third straight day. Al Jazeera's Craig Mauro reports from Puyehue.

SANTIAGO - The Puyehue volcano in southern Chile erupted on Saturday after half a century of sleep, forcing the evacuation of 3500 people and generating a giant cloud of ash that reached neighboring Argentina. The National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) of Chile has announced that the Puyehue erupted in the volcanic complex Caulle cord, caused "an explosion that produces a high gas column height of 10 km about ". The government ordered in the afternoon the evacuation of some 3500 people residing in over twenty towns near the volcano, located 870 km south of Santiago, near the Argentine border. Initially, some 600 people were evacuated in the morning as a precautionary measure after an initial warning SERNAGEOMIN, warning of strong seismic activity in the region, prior to a possible eruption. A dozen earthquakes of medium intensity, magnitude 4 were recorded in a few hours and a hundred small instensité. The National Emergency Office (Onemi) announced that at 3:15 pm (7:15 pm GMT), "the alert level Volcanic Geology Department has been elevated to 6 (on a scale of 8) corresponding to a moderate eruption. Chile volcano ash disrupts regional air travel

A vast cloud of ash spewing from a Chilean volcano has forced dozens of flights to be cancelled across South America, while mud and rain mixed with ash poured down on the resort areas in the region. Three days after Chile's Puyehue volcano began spewing debris, all flights in and out of the two busy Buenos Aires airports were scrapped on ?Tuesday after meteorologists said a portion of the cloud had moved as far as the Argentina capital, even though at 5000m high it was not visible to residents. More than 90 per cent of the flights in an out of Uruguay were also cancelled, airport officials said. Al Jazeera's Craig Mauro reports from Buenos Aires.

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain spews ash and smoke as officials evacuate thousands from the surrounding area. The volume of ash is so great that it is difficult to tell which of the four volcanoes has erupted. A volcano dormant for decades in south-central Chile continued spewing smoke on Sunday. It belched an ash cloud more than six miles high that blew over the Andes and carpeted a popular ski resort in neighboring Argentina. The eruption in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain, nearly 600 miles south of the capital, Santiago, in Patagonia prompted Chilean authorities to shut a heavily traveled border crossing into Argentina. Chile's government said it was evacuating three-and-a-half thousand people from the surrounding area as a precaution. Officials said the volcano was spitting molten rock, but there was no visible lava flow. It was not immediately clear which of the chain's four volcanoes had erupted because of ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960. It was the latest in a series of volcanic eruptions in Chile in recent years.

Chilean volcano erupts, forces mass evacuations Posted: 05 June 2011 0550 hrs SANTIAGO - Southern Chile's Puyehue volcano erupted for the first time in half a century Saturday, prompting evacuation orders for 3500 people as it sent smoke billowing into the sky, authorities said. The National Service of Geology and Mining said the explosion that sparked the eruption also produced a column of gas 10 kilometres (six miles) high, hours after warning of strong seismic activity in the area. "You can see the fire (in the volcano) and a plume of smoke, and there's a strong smell of sulfur," top Los Rios region official Juan Andres Varas told reporters. The government, which earlier ordered the evacuation of 600 people, expanded that number to 3500 people to be relocated to shelters in safe areas. Authorities issued a red alert, the maximum warning level, for the area. A border crossing between Argentina and Chile was closed. A cloud of ash could be seen in the Patagonian resort town of Bariloche in Argentina, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of the volcano. "We're trying to stop car traffic and ask that people stay at home and close their doors and windows to prevent the volcanic ash from coming in. The city's airport was also closed," Carlos Hidalgo, Bariloche's communications secretary, told TN television. "Ash was dumped like a snowstorm... The city is covered in gray ash." Earth Changes - New Ice Age -Chile's Puyehue volcano - Darude

Chile's Puyehue volcano - Volcanic Cycles Begin Ice Ages - Watch Up People ;o) Three million underwater volcanoes . 9 Jul 07 - Researchers have counted 201055 underwater cones, 10 times more than have been found before, and estimate that in total there could be about 3 million submarine volcanoes, 39000 of which rise more than 1000 meters over the sea bed. "The distribution of underwater volcanoes tells us something about what is happening in the centre of the Earth," says John Hillier of the University of Cambridge in the UK. That is because they give information about the flows of hot rock in the mantle beneath. Since the late 1960s, research vessels have been criss-crossing the oceans using sonar instruments to measure the depth of the ocean floor. They have generated 40 million kilometres of linear profiles showing the topography of the ocean bed between 60E° North ---- the latitude of southern Alaska ---- and 60E° South ---- corresponding to the tip of Patagonia. But until now, no one had been able to sift through them all. So, Hillier and a colleague designed a computer programme that was able to analyse the huge amount of data and identify volcano-like shapes in the sonar lines. The programme found 201055 volcanoes over 100m tall. Previously, satellite data had identified 14164 volcanoes over 1500 m high. Hillier then extrapolated the data to estimate how many volcanoes exist beyond the areas the research vessels sounded out. If you've read "Not by Fire but by Ice ...

Chile's Llaima volcano errupts

The Llaima volcano in southern Chile erupted, sending up a huge plume of smoke and coating the surrounding wilderness park with ash, forcing the evacuation of dozens of tourists, emergency officials said. There were no reports of damages or injuries. The volcano is in the Araucania region in southern Chile, inside Conguillio National Park and about 82 km from the city of Temuco. Local television images showed a column of dark smoke visible from many miles away. Before the eruption, people in the towns closest to the volcano said they heard loud noises underground. We've ordered the evacuation of more than 100 tourists that were in the Conguillio reserve, where a lot of ash has fallen, Carmen Fernandez, director of Chile's National Emergency Office, told reporters. The emergency office said the volcano began erupting at 1820 pm and that lava was flowing down the eastern side of the mountain. An official at the emergency office said it was still unclear whether the eruption would be brief or sustained. The 3125-meter Llaima volcano, one of Chile's most active, has frequent moderate eruptions.
