Europe Russia A pipeline story

Big dream or big nightmare, according to the points of view, EuRussia is already a part of our present. A geopolitical subject whose spine is represented by the oil and gas pipelines that bring Russia's hydrocarbons to Europe. A vast energy network that's about to be expanded, thus reinforcing the political and energy ties between the East and the West. Today, most of the Russian gas flows through the strategic Ukrainian hub. But two newly planned pipelines, North and South of the European landmass, will soon allow to bypass Kiev, freeing the energy flow from the constraints of the Ukrainian bottleneck. Furthermore, the Russian gas still to be exploited could find a promising market in China and the Far East. Though plans here are lagging behind, given the mutual distrust between Russia and China. Europe has been importing Russian gas since the Soviet times, and today like yesterday, Russia needs our revenues to fill its coffers. The Brandt-Breznev “gas for pipes” pilot agreement dates back to 1970. The first share of Russian gas flowed toward West Germany 1973. Today, it covers 25% of our energy needs, and this figure is growing. But it's not just a matter of pipes: the idea is to tie Moscow to Europe through our growing gas imports, thus contributing to Russia's wealth and preventing it from disintegrating. If we need the Russian gas, Russia can't do without our money.

Russia and China to build Oil Refinery in China.

OAO Rosneft, Russia's largest oil producer, and China National Petroleum Corp. agreed to build a $5 billion refinery in China, while the two countries may not complete talks on natural-gas supplies until next year. A feasibility study for the refinery in Tianjin will be ready in six months and construction will take two years, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin said yesterday, according to a statement posted on the government's website. Zion Oil & Gas Inc. hopes to raise as much as $19 million through an offer it's extending to current shareholders of the chance to buy additional shares. The company, which explores for oil and gas in Israel, said the offer will include investors as of Sept. 28, who will get the right to buy a piece of 3.8 million "units" of securities that Zion is offering. Russia's Arctic territories are estimated to contain up to 100 billion tons of oil and gas and the nation needs to defend its claim to those riches, a Cabinet minister said Tuesday. Natural Resources Minister Yuri Trutnev's statement comes as Russia is strengthening efforts to defend its claims to parts of the Arctic, which is believed to contain as much as a quarter of the Earth's undiscovered oil and gas.

South Korea, Russia agree $90bn gas deal

South Korea, Russia agree $90bn gas deal WATCH VIDEO Source: CCTV.com | 10-01-2008 11:07 South Korea has agreed on a 90 billion US dollar deal to import Siberian gas from Russia during a meeting in Moscow. Monday's deal, made between South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, should allow Russia to diversify away from Europe while bringing the DPRK closer to its neighbor via "pipeline diplomacy". South Korea's Energy Ministry said the country wanted to import up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas a year for 30 years after 2015. A proposed 3 billion US dollar pipeline would run from Vladivistok in Russia across the DPRK. A Russian official said the deal between Russia's gas giant Gazprom and Korean company Kogas is a fresh attempt to unlock a long-delayed pipeline project that Russia sees as a key alternative to markets in Europe. Russia first pledged to supply gas to South Korea at the start of this decade but the project to build a pipeline to China and on to South Korea has been repeatedly delayed. The delays were related to Gazprom's efforts to gain control over some of the biggest Siberian deposits, to ensure it has enough resources to fill the link. The project was also complicated by the need to supply the gas either via DPRK territory or by a more expensive underwater route.

Iraq Pump in Al Ahdab Oil Field

On July 23, the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) signed an oil service contract with the Iraqi government. The CNPC is the first foreign oil company to sign a deal since former leader, Saddam Hussein, was removed from power. The Al-Ahdab oil reserve contract allows CNPC to operate in the southern, Wasit providence of the country. This deal will make Iraq the 30 country that the state-owned, Chinese company operates in, and its 80 oil and gas project partnership. CNPC initially approached the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein prior to the War; however, the deal fell through after the US invasion in 2003. This, more recent contract, is a revised version of the prior agreement between the two governments. CNPC began oil production at 37000 barrels per day for the first phase of its operation, which was completed on 21 June: "The production will reach 60000 bpd (barrels per day) next month and will then increase to reach 120000 bpd before the end of this year," said Oil Minister Abdul-Kareem Luaibi at the launch ceremony that marked the start of oil production. Luaibi revealed that the second phase of Al-Ahdab would start in December, taking the field's output capacity to 120000 bpd, while the third phase, starting at the end of 2012, would increase capacity to an estimated 160000 bpd. Luaibi went on to note that, as a recent exploratory survey showed, Al-Ahdab has 3 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, making the oil revenue from the field valued at over 40 billion ...

Shell to build second floating LNG facility (13 Jun 2011)

Shell to build second floating LNG facility By Jo-ann Huang | Posted: 13 June 2011 2302 hrs SINGAPORE: Royal Dutch Shell said it plans to install a second floating liquid natural gas (FLNG) facility in the natural gas field off Timor Leste and Australian waters. Shell said it will proceed with the project once it gets the go-ahead to enter the field. Timor Leste and Woodside Petroleum from Australia are in a dispute over the development of the field. Timor Leste intends to build an LNG plant onshore while Woodside Petroleum wants to build a floating LNG plant. The oil giant said it wants to build more FLNG facilities in the region to tap on natural gas resources to meet growing energy demands in Asia. Stationed out some 200 kilometres off the Western Australian coast, Shell's Prelude FLNG facility will produce gas from offshore fields and liquefy it onboard by cooling. Analysts estimate the cost of the Prelude FLNG facility at US$10.5 billion to US$13 billion. And come 2017, the FLNG is expected to commence production of up to 3.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year. The Prelude gas field has around 3 trillion cubic feet equivalent of resources. Neil Gilmour, General Manager of Floating LNG at Shell, said: "The bulk of the global LNG business will be produced from onshore plants, but this gives us access to fields which are previously too remote or too costly to develop via the conventional way." Shell has tied up with Samsung Heavy Industries to assemble ...

BP NOW -China oil spill grows, official warns of 'severe threat'

BEIJING -- China's largest reported oil spill emptied beaches along the Yellow Sea as its size doubled Wednesday, while cleanup efforts included straw mats and frazzled workers with little more than rubber gloves. An official warned the spill posed a "severe threat" to sea life and water quality as China's latest environmental crisis spread off the shores of Dalian, once named China's most livable city. One cleanup worker has drowned, his body coated in crude. "I've been to a few bays today and discovered they were almost entirely covered with dark oil," said Zhong Yu with environmental group Greenpeace China, who spent the day on a boat inspecting the spill. "The oil is half-solid and half liquid and is as sticky as asphalt," she told The Associated Press by telephone. The oil had spread over 165 square miles (430 square kilometers) of water five days since a pipeline at the busy northeastern port exploded, hurting oil shipments from part of China's strategic oil reserves to the rest of the country. Shipments remained reduced Wednesday. State media has said no more oil is leaking into the sea, but the total amount of oil spilled is not yet clear. Greenpeace China released photos Wednesday of inky beaches and of straw mats about 2 square meters (21 square feet) in size scattered on the sea, meant to absorb the oil. Fishing in the waters around Dalian has been banned through the end of August, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. "The oil spill will pose a severe ...

US-China Asia-Pacific Leadership Crisis

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The idea of establishing a US-led Free Trade Area in the Asia-Pacific region, was further advanced during the recent APEC summit held in Hawaii. In respective talks between US President Barack Obama and leaders of Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and Russia, over the controversial and divergent matters, the main focus was on China's RMB exchange rate, the Iranian nuclear issue, and the South China Sea disputes, all heated issues facing the Asia-Pacific nations. On November 12, nine Asian countries signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). The agreement initially covered only Chile, New Zealand, Brunei, and Singapore. Later, the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Peru, and Vietnam joined in. Japan also expressed interest to join, but still faces domestic resistance, especially from its Agricultural Minister. The CCP authorities did not receive a TPP membership invitation. In order to compete with the TPP, the Beijing regime has strengthened the development of the ASEAN free trade zone, and accelerated its efforts to form a 10 +3 East Asian Free Trade Area, which would include China, Japan, and South Korea. Meanwhile, the CCP mouthpiece, Xinhua News Agency, alleged that the United States expanded the TPP with an aim of promoting its dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. Gas, food and clothing prices are on the rise

Gas, food and clothing prices are on the rise, gboogie.net, http NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Americans paid more for necessities like gas, food, clothing and shelter in July, as prices rose more than expected over the month. The Consumer Price Index, the government's key inflation measure, rose 0.5% in July, led by a 4.7% increase in gas prices. That's worrisome, said Daniel Penrod, senior industry analyst with the California Credit Union League, considering many Americans are still struggling amid high unemployment and low home prices. "We're looking at a situation where income isn't growing, so large price jumps right now without job growth and income growth behind it, basically mean that consumers are looking at more of their money going out the door at a time when less of it's coming back in on an income side," Penrod said. Food prices rose 0.4% and the cost of shelter rose 0.3% in July. Higher clothing prices, predicted by the industry earlier this year, have also taken hold. Apparel prices rose 1.2% in July alone, and over the last three months, are up 3.9%. Over the entire year, apparel prices have increased at their fastest rate since 1992. Part of that rise could still be due to cotton prices hitting a record high in March, following supply shortages. The weak dollar is also driving prices for imports, including clothing, higher, said Jennifer Lee, senior economist with BMO Capital Economics. "We import a lot of clothing from China for example, and a weak dollar means ...

Inhofe Speech: Ending the Obama Administration's Attack on Affordable Energy

Learn more at www.epw.senate.gov/inhofe The following are excerpts from the speech: "But what I call the Obama Administration's cap-and-trade agenda is also playing a major role in pushing prices higher-and not just for gasoline. This agenda hurts families, truckers, and farmers-basically, anyone who drives, uses diesel, or flips a light switch. In a word: everyone. "My message today is simply this: higher gas prices-indeed, higher prices for the energy we use - are an explicit policy goal of the Obama Administration. Let me put it another way: the Obama Administration is attacking affordable energy. "By stopping the President's costly cap-and-trade rules, we will also remove a significant barrier to developing America's energy resources. You see, the cap-and-trade agenda is also about energy austerity. The hope is that if we restrict enough supply, the price will increase, and we can then simply shift to less costly alternatives. Yet this is wishful thinking. "We have, in fact, 163 billion barrels of recoverable oil-nearly six times higher than what President Obama and the Democrats like to claim. Let's think about 163 billion barrels for a moment: that is enough to maintain our current levels of production and replace our imports from the Persian Gulf for more than 50 years. "But oil resources offer only a glimpse of the full picture. As I noted earlier, CRS found that America's combined recoverable natural gas, oil, and coal endowment is the largest on Earth. Commodities Report: Oil Gains on Encouraging China Data

Oil is gaining ground in early morning trade as Asian and European shares rise on the back of strong economic data from China and Japan in particular. Beijing reported that Chinese exports rose to their highest level in six years in May, rising 48.5% from a year ago. Meanwhile, Japan's economy grew at an annualized 5% rate in the first quarter. Gold, on the other hand, is falling as investors' willingness to take on risks increased on renewed hopes for the global economy. In addition, the yellow metal came under selling pressure as the euro rose following comments by China's national pension fund chief Dai Xianglong who said that the European unit would weather the ongoing sovereign debt crisis. At 0755 ET, Brent crude is up 0.5% at $74.64 a barrel, while light sweet crude is up 0.7% at $74.83 a barrel, and natural gas is up 1.0% at $4.72 a million British thermal units. Gold is 0.3% weaker at $1225.70 an ounce, while silver is down 0.9% at $18.04 an ounce, but copper is up 0.2% at $2.85 a pound. The International Energy Agency lifted its 2010 forecast for global oil demand, as it anticipates worldwide use to rise by 1.7 million barrels a day, or up 2% on year, to 86.4 million barrels. That marks a rise of 60000 barrels from the agency's earlier estimate. Chinese oil import rose 29% during the first five months of the year compared to the same period a year ago to 95.7 million metric tons on strong demand for motor fuel and electricity, according to the General ...

Gasoline and Fuel Economy: Auto Industry at a Crossroads

Gasoline and Fuel Economy: Auto Industry at a Crossroads - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2008-06-26 - On June 26th, The Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming discussed the future role of the auto industry and our federal government in fighting gas prices and examine the fuel economy standards proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in response to the enactment of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. NHTSA's proposal calls for the fleet of cars and light trucks to average 31.6 miles per gallon by model year 2015 - but when calculating these standards, NHTSA used Energy Information Administration (EIA) assumptions about gas prices that defy reality, ranging from .42/gallon in 2016 to .51/gallon in 2030. The administration concedes that gas prices are the most critical element in determining mile per gallon increases in America's vehicle fleet. At a hearing before the Select Committee earlier this month, the EIA said NHTSA should use the high end analysis for gas prices, which would have the effect of significantly raising the achievable miles per gallon in future vehicles. WITNESS LIST: The Honorable Tyler Duvall, Assistant Secretary for Policy, Department of Transportation; Mr. Dominique Thormann, Senior Vice President, Nissan North America, Inc.; Mr. Shai Agassi, Founder and CEO, Project Better Place; Mr. Torben Holm, Consultant, DONG Energy A/S; Mr. Jeffrey R. CIA Archives: Anti-US Propaganda Intercepted from China - Listening Post (1960)

thefilmarchive.org In China, there has been a history of anti-Americanism, beginning with the general disdain for foreigners in the early 19th century that culminated in the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. Later, Mao Zedong described the US as a "paper tiger," occupiers of Taiwan, "the enemy of the people of the world and has increasingly isolated itself" and "monoply capitalist groups." The Taiwanese Strait Crisis has led China to blame the US for any issues that arise in the bilateral relationship between China and Taiwan, as they believe that American support of Taiwan is an effort to weaken their country. Recently, in 2009, Luo Ping criticized America's laissez-faire capitalism and said that he hated America when the United States Treasury would start to print money and depreciate the value of the dollar, thus cheapening the value of China's purchase of US bonds. Chinese hackers have also conducted extensive cyberwarfare against American institutions and citizens targeting the US and its Western allies. Furthermore, China's leaders present their country as an alternative to the meddling power of the West.
