Chinese air force J-10 drill looks awfully similar to 'Top Gun'(WSJ) put the videos side-by-side

On Jan. 23, China's state broadcaster, CCTV, ran a story about an air force training exercise that contained some suspicious footage. Around the segment's one minute 12 seconds mark (see above), as the China-US-oriented blog Ministry of Tofu pointed out, "the way a target was hit by the air-to-air missile fired by a J-10 fighter aircraft and exploded looks almost identical to a cinema scene from the Hollywood film Top Gun." Viewers were led to believe that what they were seeing was a live fire exercise. But according to Ministry of Tofu: "A net user who went by the name "刘毅" (Liu Yi) pointed out that the jet that the J-10 'hit' is an F-5, a US fighter jet. In Top Gun, what the leading actor Tom Cruise pilots an F-14 to bring down is exactly an F-5. Looking at the screenshots juxtaposition, one cannot fail to find that even flame, smoke and the way the splinters fly look the same." Not convinced? The Wall Street Journal's China Real Time Report put the videos side-by-side.

Chinese ZDK-03 AWACS aircraft for Pakistan Air Force: Roll out ceremony held in China

PAF s' Multimedia www.paffalcons.com The rollout ceremony of first of four Chinese ZDK-03 Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) aircrafts for the Pakistan Air Force was held at Hanzhong in China today. The rollout coincided with President Asif Ali Zardari's visit to China -- his sixth since assuming the position in 2008. PAF chief Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman was the chief guest at the ceremony, which was attended by the Commander of the PLA Air Force and other military and civil officials of China. The PAF signed a contract in 2008 with China Electronics Technology Group Corporation for the joint development of four ZDK-03 AWACS aircraft configured to Pakistan's specifications. The ZDK-03 is an advanced AWACS with sophisticated integrated sensors and communications suite, PAF said in a statement. In his speech at the rollout, Air Chief Marshal Suleman described the event as "another milestone in the exemplary history of cooperation between Pakistan and China". This AWACS will strengthen the PAF's capabilities to maintain "peace with honour in the region", he said. The AWACS is part of PAF's overall strategy of transforming itself into a "lean and technologically advanced air force", Suleman said. The PAF will not spare any effort to make the defence of the country impregnable, he added. CETC Chairman Wang Zhigang said the induction of the AWACS by the PAF will have a "positive impact on regional stability, peace and prosperity as well as on the close bond ...

BASE jump down a Chinese sinkhole: Red Bull Air Force

Shane McConkey, Miles Daisher and Chuck Berry of the Red Bull Air Force recently pioneered their way into the heart of China. After months of negotiation, the government allowed the Red Bull Air Force and friends into their borders for a BASE jumping session at one of China's natural wonders, a giant cave depression. Although no professional camera crews were allowed to follow, we managed to give all the guys a few hand held cameras and a quick cinematography lesson on the way to the airport. We all think they did a bang-up job. redbullairforce.com

Pakistan Air Force JF-17 Thunder aerobatics (Zhuhai air show,China 2010)

The JF-17 was primarily developed to meet the requirements of the Pakistan Air Force for a cost-effective, modern, multi-role combat aircraft as an inexpensive replacement for its large fleet of aging Nanchang A-5 bombers, Chengdu F-7 interceptors and Dassault Mirage III/5 fighters. It was also to have export potential to air forces of other countries as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive Western-origin fighters.

The Sukhoi Su-27 (Cyrillic: Сухой Су-27) (NATO reporting name: Flanker) is a single-seat, twin-engine Mach-2 class jet fighter originally manufactured by the Soviet Union, and designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. It was intended as a direct competitor for the large United States fourth generation fighters, with long 3530-kilometre (1910 nmi) range, heavy armament, sophisticated avionics and high maneuverability. The Su-27 most often flies air superiority missions, but is able to perform almost all combat operations. Complementing the smaller MiG-29, the Su-27's closest US counterpart is the F-15 Eagle. There are several related developments of the Su-27 design. The Su-30 is a two-seat, dual-role fighter for all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions. The Su-33 'Flanker-D' is a navy fleet defense interceptor for use on aircraft carriers. Further versions include the side-by-side 2-seat Su-34 'Fullback' strike variant and the Su-35 'Flanker-E' improved air defense fighter.
