The lesson is followed by a little music video I produced to draw attention to reasons people should visit China! The clay ocarina-style flute I bought from them got knocked down and broken by rats which temporarily infested my storage unit in January, 2011, now I have to go back to China to this store and get another one!!!

performed by Lu Chunling, Li Yi, Xu Fengxia and Zhang Zhenfang in Amsterdam. The two stars of the ensemble are the 85 year old Lu Chunling (standing on the picture with his flute) and the 72 year old Li Yi (sitting, holding his banjo). Lu is a master of the bamboo flute. His instrument and virtuosity lead him to play in front of well known people as Queen Elizabeth II and Mao Zedong. The lively and lovely grandpa told the audience during the performance that he has been in the Netherlands 50 years ago, quite some things have changed since his first visit, when he was in his mid-30s. Li Yi is a recognized player of the Chinese banjo. Xu Fengxia (behind her citer on the picture) and Zhang Zhenfang were contributing to the great performance with their instruments, the citer and the erhu.

Just a beginner, Trying to play some Hungarian folkmusic on the bawu flute From the wikipedia: The bawu is a Chinese wind instrument. Although shaped like a flute, it is actually a free reed instrument, with a single metal reed. It is played in a transverse (horizontal) manner. It has a pure, clarinet-like timbre and its playing technique incorporates the use of much ornamentation, particularly bending tones. Although the bawu likely originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China, it has become a standard instrument throughout China, used in modern Chinese compositions for traditional instrument ensembles. It is typically used as a solo instrument, and is often featured in film scores; it is sometimes also heard in popular music recordings. Although the bawu is still predominantly performed in China, it has in recent years been adopted by European composers and performers. Rohan Leach from England; Rapheal De Cock from Belgium and Herman Witkam from the Netherlands have all taken the instrument in new directions.
Hey All, My cousin was in Malaysia & was kind enough to bring me back two DIZI Flutes, known also as Chinese Flutes. These are very special flutes, which have a membrane over a soundhole, which produces a very distinct nasal buzzing sound. Unfortunately i don't have any of the reed material or the substance used to stick it on, so i'm just using tape.... I haven't had it long enough to really figure out any decent tunes, i've just spent time trying to learn to produce a sound out of it, since it has a 3 octave range (admittedly i hit the second octave by accident in this video). I can play some middle eastern scales on it, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having an asian flute. I didn't use a drone on this track, because i'm suspecting that these aren't concert tuned flutes, or my technique is still not quite right and i'm not playing them in tune.... enjoy, DFZ
