Chinese Martial Arts a Hit in Japan

If you thought Chinese martial arts are only popular in China, take a look at this. The 26th annual Wushu Taijiquan Championships kicked off in Japan, featuring thousands of martial arts enthusiasts from all over the country. NTDs Tokyo bureau has more on this story. Taijiquan, long-range punch, and other traditional Chinese martial arts techniques are on display at a competition organized by Japan Wushu Taijiquan Federation. [Kyuhei Muraoka, JWTF Vice President]: (Japanese, male) This time around 2100 challengers from all over Japan participated. The oldest is 78 years old, and the youngest is seven years old. Recently, younger people have begun participating more and I am happy about that. Exactly how did Chinese-rooted martial arts become so popular in Japan? Martial arts instructor Sun Jianming says he has the answer. [Sun Jianming, Martial Arts Instructor]: (Chinese, male) I think the main reason is that Chinese martial arts has a certain charm and 'fits' the body well. It isnt only for keeping fit, but also to teach courtesy and morality. Japanese people's politeness is famous throughout the world, but morality in Chinese martial arts has another meaning. Bringing more than 20 years experience as an instructor, Sun won the national male fencing and male Taijiquan championships in mainland China before starting to train Japans top martial artists in 1986. He's also excited about NTD's Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Competition. Sun says it's an effective way to ...

Taiji quan instructor

Born in 1972. Did not have any contact with martial arts until the age of 30, if you don't count the numerous books about qi gong and karate. I would open them and would say -Wow! Cool! I also want to do this! -- then would put them away for an indefinite amount of time. Once I even attended the Tzusemon karate training, but that didn't spur enough enthusiasm not in me, nor in the instructor. But during another time, I came across a school of traditional martial arts what is today known as Golden Dragon. I don't think I can really tell you what I heard there at first or what I saw -- it remains a mystery even for me. But I didn't attend just the first or the second or the tenth training, I started regularly going and practicing martial arts. Today, I am the instructor of the main group of internal family of kung fu, a mini- group of the internal family, and also I do one to one individual training. www.kungfu-school.com our facebook group http

Shaolin Monk Rain Demonstration

The Shaolin Monks of China perform a private demonstration for United Studios of Self Defense an American Martial Arts Organization. The demonstration took place at the Shaolin Temples in Henan China. The monks performed the demonstration even though it rained. The Shaolin temples (Shàolín Sì) are a group of Chinese Buddhist monasteries famed for their long association with Chán (Japanese Zen) Buddhism and martial arts. They are perhaps the Buddhist monasteries most familiar in the West. The name "Shaolin" means "Young Forest". Shaolin is situated on China's central Taoist sacred mountain, Songshan in Henan province. It was founded during the Northern Wei dynasty in approximately 497 AD and remains one of China's oldest Buddhist temples. It was said to have been used as a home by the Indian monk Batuo during the thirty years he spent preaching Nikaya Buddhism in China. Probably the most famous name associated with Shaolin is that of Bodhidharma or Tamo (pinyin: Dámó), an Indian monk who travelled to China in 5th century to teach Buddhism. A traditional story relates that Bodhidharma sat in meditation facing a wall in a nearby cave for nine years. Bodhidharma's ministry at Shaolin formed the basis for what would later be called the Zen or, in China, Chán (both terms means Meditation) school of Buddhism. After entering Shaolin, it is said that Bodhidharma found the monks out of shape from a lifetime spent only in study and scholasticism, so he introduced a regimen of ...

Shaolin Yi Jin Jing Muscle & Tendon Changing Classic

"The basic purpose of Yijinjing is to turn flaccid and frail sinews and tendons into strong and sturdy ones. The movements of Yijinjing are at once vigorous and gentle. Their performance calls for a unity of will and strength, ie using ones will to direct the exertion of muscular strength. It is coordinated with breathing. Better muscles and tendons means better health and shape, more resistance, flexibility, endurance, and is obtained as follows: - postures influences the static and nervous structure of the body - stretching muscles and sinews affects organs, joints, meridians and Qi - torsion affects metabolism and Jing production - breathing produce more and better refined Qi - active working gives back balance and strength to body and mind (brain, nervous system and spirit). The Yì Jin Jing (Chinese: ???; Wade-Giles: I Chin Ching; literally "Muscle/Tendon Change Classic") is a qìgong manual most notable as the source of the attribution of Shaolin Kung Fu to Bodhidharma, though this has been doubted by several martial arts historians. Pan Wei was a devoted student and practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, and his treatise in the form of- a preface reflects his vast knowledge of this subject. It is common knowledge that within the works of Lao-Zu, Chuang Zu, and even Mencius, many references are made to the ancients practicing various forms of breathing exercises. Pan Wei says that he had consulted various medical treatises; however, he did not mention that any ...

World Wushu Championships 2010 by Empty Mind Films

This is the World Traditional Wushu Championships 2010, which took place in China at Wudang Mountain (in Shiyan City) in October. We put together this overview of the martial arts championships. Quite a large number of countries competed including a small USA team. Empty Mind Films was there filming part of an upcoming film release about one of the competitors from Shaolin. The event was not actually open to the public which is odd, so I am not sure how tickets were dispersed. We did see a number of friends from Wudang Mountain which was nice.
