The ensemble Music from China performs masterworks from the Chinese classical and folk repertoire with an array of stylistic variations, timbral colors, and musical imagery. The program includes such immortal classical compositions as Ambush on Ten Sides, a powerful re-creation of a third-century battle scene, and the romance with nature of A Moonlit River in Spring. Folk music selections span China's broad landscape, from the urban sophistication of Shanghai and Guangzhou (Canton) to the vast expanse of the Mongolian steppes.

performed by Lu Chunling, Li Yi, Xu Fengxia and Zhang Zhenfang in Amsterdam. The two stars of the ensemble are the 85 year old Lu Chunling (standing on the picture with his flute) and the 72 year old Li Yi (sitting, holding his banjo). Lu is a master of the bamboo flute. His instrument and virtuosity lead him to play in front of well known people as Queen Elizabeth II and Mao Zedong. The lively and lovely grandpa told the audience during the performance that he has been in the Netherlands 50 years ago, quite some things have changed since his first visit, when he was in his mid-30s. Li Yi is a recognized player of the Chinese banjo. Xu Fengxia (behind her citer on the picture) and Zhang Zhenfang were contributing to the great performance with their instruments, the citer and the erhu.

This beautiful piece sounds like Guqin music (古琴), Chinese zither with 7 strings. In fact it is performed on Guzheng (Chinese harp with 21 strings) by Liu Fang who is best known as the virtuoso of the pipa (Chinese lute). The title is "Chanting of Tiema" (Tie Ma Yin 鐵馬吟) composed by Zhao Dengshan (趙登山) is one of the most excellent pieces composed in the 80s. This piece is full of spirit of the traditional classical style of music. It is said that the inspiration was related to a temple in a mountain. Tiema contains pieces of metals (Buddhist prayer bells) hanging on the roof outside of the temple. It produces special sounds when wind blows. The composition of this piece catches beautifully a sense of the tranquility and an image of being in nature - the spiritual inspiration of this piece makes it a good choice for meditation. The beauty and grace of traditional Chinese music is well examplified in the excellent performance of this classical instrumental masterpiece "Wild geese descending on the sandy beach" (平沙落雁), one of best know piece for pipa solo from the traditional classical repertoire. Liu Fang performed this piece at the CBC studio before the concert in Toronto in November 2008. The inspiration is said to come from watching the wild geese flying freely and elegantly in the sky and then descending on the sandy beach, relaxing and playful - a perfect image for the beauty and harmony of nature. Original Singer: Steve Chou Chuan-huing (traditional Chinese: 周傳雄; pinyin: Zhōu Chuánxióng) is a Taiwanese composer and singer. He started singing and composing in 1989 and has written a variety of well known Chinese songs sung by famous singers and himself. In 2000, his album, Transfer contained the hit song Huanghun (traditional Chinese: 黃昏), and was Zhou Chuan Xiong's breakthrough. In 2003, he released another album, Dubbing, which consists of many famous songs he had written before and some new songs. This album is his best so far, in terms of sales and chart numbers. The 2004 album Mixing was less warmly received. His next album, Xing Kong Xia De Xiao Shuo (Under The Star), came in 2005. His latest 2006 album is already in stores.
