Singers Arrested in China -the Chinese Communist Party arrests NTDTV Vocal Competition participants Thu, 11 Oct 2007 09:52:00 NTDTV CHAN: NTDTV's vocal competition which is being held next week has attracted artists from all over the globe, but at the same time it has attracted the harassment from the Chinese Communist Party. According to competition participant Liu zhu jia who is friends with the victims, on the evening of October 8th police in the Sun-Cheng district of Fusun city Liaoning province went to arrest three vocal competition participants at their homes. By coincidence, when none of the three participants were there, the police ransacked the participants' homes and intimidated their family members for information. The regime then released a message demanding that the participants turn in their passports to police immediately. Ms. Liu who resides in Germany says two of the participants being sought by police Su Hongyu and Liang Bin called her from separate pay phones and told her that the police are at their homes, thus they are in hiding and asked her to contact NTDTV with details of what had happened. And we have just received news that one of the participants Zhao Man has since turned in her passport to police and is now under house arrest. We will keep you posted.

Heart sutra in Sanskrit by Chinese singer Imee Ooi
The Heart of Perfect Wisdom Sutra or Heart Sutra or Essence of Wisdom Sutra (Sanskrit: प्रज्ञापारमिताहृदय Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya) is a well-known MahāyānaBuddhist sutra that is very popular among Mahayana Buddhists both for its brevity and depth of meaning. The Heart Sutra is made up of 14 shlokas in Sanskrit; a shloka composed of 32 syllables. In Chinese, it is 262 Chinese characters, while in English it is composed of sixteen sentences. The Heart Sutra has generally been thought to have probably been composed in the first century CE in Kushan Empire territory, by a Sarvastivadin or ex-Sarvastivadin monk. The earliest record of a copy of the sutra is a 200-250CE Chinese version attributed to the Yuezhi monk Zhi Qian. It was supposedly translated again by Kumarajiva around 400CE, although John McRae and Jan Nattier have argued that this translation was created by someone else, much later, based on Kumarajiva's Large Sutra. Zhi Qian's version, if it ever existed, was lost before the time of Xuanzang, who produced his own version in 649CE, which closely matches the one attributed to Kumarajiva. Xuanzang's version is the first record of the title "Heart Sutra" (心經xīnjīng) being used for the text, and Fukui Fumimasa has argued that xinjing actually means dharani scripture. According to Huili's biography, Xuanzang learned the sutra from an inhabitant of Sichuan, and subsequently chanted it during times of danger in his journey to the West. Sung by Chinese <b>...</b>

He started singing and composing in 1989 and has written a variety of well known Chinese songs sung by famous singers and himself. In 2000, his album, Transfer contained the hit song Huanghun (traditional Chinese: 黃昏), and was Zhou Chuan Xiong's breakthrough. In 2003, he released another album, Dubbing, which consists of many famous songs he had written before and some new songs. This album is his best so far, in terms of sales and chart numbers. Men playing female roles in stage performances can be dated back to Ancient Rome and were widely seen in Shakespeare's plays. Well, that phenomenon is not exclusive to the west. In traditional Chinese operas, such as Peking Opera, many female characters are performed by male actors. Li Yugang is one of the most popular actors currently singing and performing in drag on stage in China. He is one of the two Chinese singers to successfully hold their own concerts in the Sydney Opera House. Li Yugang was born in a common farming family in northeast China. In his home village, he was the first person who passed the entrance exam for a university in a big city. But he chose to pursue his dream of performing. He left home when he was only 13. Back then, he even couldn't afford a train ticket back home. Earlier this year, he held another successful concert in Beijing. Audience lined up for more than 10 hours to get tickets. But Li Yugang's step doesn't falter as he continues to work on his art. Although there are some different critiques about the fact that he performs in drag, he says he will persist at it and create more fine works to promote the traditional Chinese art form and culture.

His rise to fame was meteoric because of his good looks and emotional masculine voice. Things were looking really good for him for he was winning over a lot of Singaporean fans which was quite a feat even in those days. Everyone was looking to Hong Kong and Taiwan for Chinese songs and local singers were considered inferior. Unfortunately, he was killed in an accident.
