Maria Sharapova Vs. Jelena Jankovic - Cincinnati 2011 Final Highlights
Maria has won her second title of 2011 at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Maria defeated No.13 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 4-6 7-6 6-3 in 2 hours and 49 minutes. Congratulations Maria! This is Maria's 24th singles title and her second Premier 5 title of 2011. Maria started the first set well, serving good and hitting winners as she took a 4-1 lead but then Jankovic fought back and took the next five games to take the set 6-4. Maria battled back in the second set to force a tie-break which she won 7-3. The first six games of the third set were all breaks of serve until Maria held serve to go 4-3 up and took the next two games to wrap up the win. In the rankings Maria will move up to No.4 with 6346 points (Maria's highest ranking coming back from shoulder surgery over two years ago). Following Kim Clijsters withdrawal from the US Open, Maria will be seeded No.3 there. In another rankings jump, Maria is now No.1 in the race to the WTA Championships. Maria will now take the next week off to prepare for the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open. The US Open will begin on August 29th.

CINCINNATI — Xavier center Kenny Frease used a white cloth to soak up the blood streaming from a gash below his eye. Coaches from both teams bear-hugged their players and tried to yank them away from the bedlam. The latest crosstown shootout got out of control Saturday and ended in bedlam, a few seconds early. The repercussions haven't even started. Eighth-ranked Xavier beat crosstown rival Cincinnati 76-53 on Saturday in a game that featured a steady stream of trash talking and was called with 9.4 seconds left when the teams got into a brawl in a corner of the court. Words escalated into shoves and swings. Both benches cleared. Frease left the court with a stream of blood on his face after getting punched by Cincinnati's Yancy Gates and then kicked as he lay on the floor. It left a black-and-blue mark on the annual rivalry. Suspensions are expected after the videotapes are reviewed. The Atlantic 10 and the Big East were examining the brawl, along with the schools. "There's no excuse for any of them, on our side, on their side," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said angrily. "Guys need to grow up. "There is zero excuse for that in basketball. You've got to learn how to win on one side, you've got to learn how to lose on the other side." The last two games have been one-sided, leading to some heightened emotion.
