According to legend, humans were always fascinated with the sky; therefore they created increasingly sophisticated ways of lifting aircraft from the ground. This eventually led to flying cities and fortresses. Due to an unspecified catastrophe, most of the flying cities were either destroyed or crashed to the ground, forcing the survivors to live on the ground as before. One city, Laputa, is said to remain in the sky, concealed in the swirling clouds of a violent thunderstorm. While most people considered it to be fictional, some believed the legend to be true and sought to find the ancient city. "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" is a 1986 film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is the first film created and released by Studio Ghibli. Castle in the Sky won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1986. The name Laputa itself comes from a novel written by Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels. In this story, Swift's Laputa is also a flying island that was controlled by its citizens. Miyazaki's Laputa: "Castle in the Sky" is similar to themes from Swift's Laputa, where the technological superiority of the castle in the sky is used for political ends.

This happened on Saturday May 21st 2011 between 4 & 5 am. The noise started kind of low then stopped and started a few times. Then at one point it got loud enough to hear from in the house. The sound is hard to describe and difficult to pinpoint, but it sounds like a very loud airplane engine noise or a blowtorch. The noise level eventually dropped lower and lower. When it stopped it almost sounded like a blowtorch flame or stove/bbq grill flame shutting off. I have no idea what it was and never saw anything in the sky, but it's a limited typical city view. My brother walked to the end of the block, but didn't see anything either. This video took place in the Heights in Jersey City over by the Union City border. My brother's friend who lives two blocks away heard it too. Also, it was heard by someone living over at terrace ave which is 9 blocks West of the house! It's a Nikon Coolpix L11 6MP camera which takes great photos, but has subpar audio recording, so these videos don't capture the full quality of witnessing the noise.

This is a 24 hour observation of all of the large aircraft flights in the world, condensed down to 1:11. From space we look like a bee hive of activity. What you will see, is a video showing air traffic around the world for 24 hours, taken from a satellite. The yellow dots are airplanes in the sky during a 24 hour period. Stay with the picture. You will see the light of the day moving from the east to the west, as the Earth spins on its axis. Also you will see the aircraft flow of traffic leaving the North American continent and traveling at night to arrive in the UK in the morning. Then you will see the flow changing, leaving the UK in the morning and flying to the American continent in daylight. This is something that everyone should see. For us old-timers it is really fascinating. For our children/grandchildren it provides a superb learning moment and an opportunity to open up what could be a very interesting discussion. This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. There are lots of people in the sky at any given moment. You can tell it was spring time in the north by the sun's foot print over the planet. You could see that it didn't set for long in the extreme north and it didn't quite rise in the extreme south. I have never seen this before. We are taught about the earth's tilt and how it causes summer and winter and we have had to imagine just what is going on. A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast on Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Fulham explained that he receives his insight from a "transcended spiritual group," which consists of "very old souls who have lived on many different planets and spiritual realms." It's cold, it's dry, the air is thin. The nearest city is miles away across a barren landscape of boulder-strewn hills. At night, the only lights to guide you are the stars in the sky. Astronomers, welcome to paradise. Known as the driest place on Earth, Chile's Atacama Desert has long been recognized as an ideal spot for ground-based telescopes. The skies are free of light pollution, and the high plains enjoy long stretches of steady atmospheric conditions, allowing astronomers to peer deeply into the cosmos without having to worry about turbulence distorting the data. In the new time-lapse movie above, photographers Christoph Malin and Babak Tafreshi (founder of The World at Night, or TWAN, program) offer a rarely seen glimpse of Cerro Paranal, one of the high hills in the Atacama that houses instruments for the European Southern Observatory(ESO). Made by invitation from the ESO, the video includes more than 7500 still images taken between October and November 2011. It shows the beauty of the dark Atacama skies, sometimes framed by the four main domes of the Very Large Telescope, as well as a brief "behind the scenes" look at what telescope operators see from inside one of the domes.
