Clayton Boyer's Marble Strike Clock

This is the completed Marble Strike Clock designed by celebrated wood gear clock design artist, Clayton Boyer (www.lisaboyer.com). Modifications have been made to the pendulum, drive weight, face and hands, and mounting frame, but the brilliant mechanism is 100% Clayton.

Clayton Boyer's Weird Gears

Here is a set of gears following Clayton Boyer's plans. It includes 2 of the pentagonal gears and 6 each of the triangle and square gears. The gears are lasercut from cherry while the box is made of basswood. This set is licensed for sale by Clayton Boyer. The gears can be moved around easily for multiple combinations. Available for sale at leafpdx.com Song is an 8 bit version of "Lemon Tree" from Fool's Garden.

Clayton Boyer #6 clock built by Craig...again

I built another #6 clock from Clayton Boyer's design after trying to correct some of the mistakes I made on the first one. Halfway through the fixes, I realized I should just rebuild the whole darn thing. The frame and other accents are cherry, top and bottom are curly maple (but the nice part of the grain isn't facing forward...d'oh!), maple leaf bob is curly maple also. Gears are all 1/2 inch baltic birch. The circles in the end of the hour and minute hands are rosewood. I strayed from Clayton's design on a few minor visual elements just to make it unique. It was a lot of fun building it and I was able to test out some of my new woodworking equipment building it (router table). If you think wooden clock are interesting or want to build one, I suggest you look at Clayton's design's, he has a website with them all, see here: lisaboyer.com

#6 Wooden Clock

This wooden clock was designed by Clayton Boyer and made by Philip Brutz. It is made from a teak banister scavenged from the Cleveland Museum of Art's former Asian gallery. The hands are made of rosewood given to me by the late Gerald Smith, master cabinet maker at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This clock was made as a memorial for him.

Bird of Paradise Wood Gear Clock

This clock was built by Frank Leach in about 40 hours. The wood gears are scrollsawed out of Baltic Birch plywood and the frame is solid walnut. The unusual Grasshopper Escapement is extremely quiet unlike the more common Graham escapement on most pendulum clocks. A six pound weight powers the clock for 24 hours before rewinding is necessary. Plans are available from Clayton Boyer.

Toucan, an electric wooden gear clock.

Thanks to Clayton Boyer and those who helped design the Toucan. More below Sorry about the Hum on the video cant figure out how to fix it. I actually rewound the electromagnet three times, first time with plastic, second time I messed up on the soldering of the transistor, Dont put glue over the transistor until you know that it works properly, other wise its get messy when you have take it all apart and do it again. I used Walnut for the frame, Bubinga for the clock face frame, Veneer for the top of the base plate and Buttons, Black walnut for the Toucan and for the beak I used Zebrawood. For the hands and Gears I used Baltic Birch Plywood. I used my wife's oil from her sewing machine on the pendulum Toucan shaft as I didn't have any clock oil. If the Pendulum is clunking, it needs adjusting, it just needs a gentle pulse for the pendulum to move. Some things I didn't mention, I used a 8/32 tap for threading the top part of the pendulum and the weight shell and bob. I increased the thickness/width of half the cannon pinion spacer to give the main wheel a little more stability, maybe not necessary but I did it as it also helps the grommet have more bite when tightening the cannon pinion to the shaft. The Button on the intermediate is slightly larger to stop the hour wheel from creeping forward. Super Glue, I hope I explained it properly, I took the pendulum bob off to fix the sloppines, I used the superglue the really runny one to wet the wood where the screw goes in, the ...

Making the #6 part 4. A wooden gear clock

A Wooden Gear Clock designed by Clayton Boyer. Goof alert. This clock is a work in progress, I found out that I needed to remake my pallets to get the the Number 6 to work better. If you have to keep adding weight and you have run out of pendulum adjustment it means something is not right, you need to either take the clock apart and clean and polish all surfaces, or replace the pallets and escape wheel like I did. you can see my healthier ticking clock on my other video 'tips to get your clock working,' to see what I mean. I also Cut out the spaces inbetween the clock hands to make it lighter. they kept falling down and it seemed to be half past six a lot. www.lisaboyer.com If you need additional information go to Clayton Boyer website and check out his information links, or watch Adrian Iredale's videos too. I made this clock out of Black Walnut.

Wooden Gear Clock

This was my first attempt at making a wooden gear clock after visiting a few of the sites on the internet, mainly the site of Clayton Boyer which gave me the real inclination . I wanted to make the clock for commercial reasons so was unable to use the plans availabe on the Clayton Boyer site. Understandable really. The clock is made from laminates because of their stability, although I do intend to radially laminate hardwood for future gears as I think they do look a lot better. The base is made from beech. I intend to replace the dead beat escapement with a grasshopper in the near future, hence the additional height above the existing escapement. Anyhow hope you enjoy it. My film making skills are nothing to write home about though. I am considering offering the clock in kit form so any comments would be constructive.

Yet another #6 Boyer clock by Craig

Another Clayton Boyer style clock, gear layout, most other based on his #6 design. Please visit his website at lisaboyer.com I used a gear generating program, created new gears in DXF format and had a metal fabricating shop create steel gear templates that I used to pin router the baltic birch gears instead of freehand cutting on band or scroll saw (Much faster and far more uniform teeth). Haven't made the weight shell yet, using a PVC pipe for now. Woods used are tiger maple and bolivian rosewood for the frame and bloodwood for the hands. I was going for a very austere, simple, linear looking clock. Keeping great time so far! Clock will be donated to local high school for a charity event.

This is a Clayton Boyer design and the first wooden gear clock that I ever built but I'm sure not to be the last. Please note the slowing of the escapement in the vid. Thanks to Clayton Boyer for his design of such wonderful mechanisms.
