A US-operated Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people aboard has lost an engine in high seas, but is limping safely to its scheduled port. The Argentine Navy said the Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had lost an engine amid heavy seas and 55 miles per hour (90 km per hour) winds. Gary and I received a personal tour of the Clelia II's engine room while sailing to Antarctica. The Ukrainian engineers took time, mostly off video, to explain many of the ship's inner workings for us. While the National Geographic Explorer was filming the Clelia II in the Drake Passage, we were standing in our 6th floor port side stateroom filming them. The Clelia II had lost her navigation and communications equipment, so she was just riding out the storm until she could safely continue back to Argentina. The Nat Geo ship dropped off a sat phone to the Clelia II crew.

This was the first ship to kick off the 2010 Portland Harbor Cruise Ship season!, "Clelia II" , the schedule said that this ship was going to leave at 10:30pm , but while getting a video of the tanker Ice Traveler, I glanced to my left and witnessed a gorgeous spectacle! Celia Ii was on its way out, and the sun was hitting the ship and making it glow magically! I got a perfect shot of it going by spring point lighthouse, and it passing Ice Traveler!!! AMAZING FOOTAGE!!! (I think so) :D

Thunder Bay, ON -- The Clelia II arrived in Thunder Bay today after completing a long journey to get here. The ship was completely overhauled in Europe, and left the Mediteranian Sea several weeks ago, headed to the St. Lawrence Seaway. The 290 foot long vessel can accommodate up to 100 guests in 50 suites, each of which affords a lake view. She is 290 feet in length with a beam of 50 feet and is staffed by 60 European officers and crew. Onboard amenities include a restaurant, two lounges with A/V facilities, library with Internet access, gym and spa, beauty salon, boutique, two sun decks, marble-appointed bathrooms and teak floors. Clelia II is on her maiden voyage to the Head of the Lakes. This season kicks off a series of one-week/one-way trips between Toronto and Duluth. Throughout the summer, the Clelia II will return to Thunder Bay a total of six times. Legislation still on the books requires that passenger ships on the Great Lakes must alternate their ports of call between the United States and Canada. "Cruise vessels have called on the Twin Ports periodically in recent years, but its been decades since weve enjoyed regular Great Lakes cruise service or served as a destination and/or origination hub.
