What is Cloud Computing?

Traditional business applications and platforms are too complicated and expensive. They need a data center, a complex software stack and a team of experts to run them. This short video explains what Cloud Computing is and why it's faster, lower cost and doesn't eat up your valuable IT resources.

Cloud Computing (in Plain English)

Cloud Computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that's often used to represent the Internet in flow charts and diagrams. Cloud Computing

A lighter look at what's possible when IT systems are dynamic and smarter. Workstations used to be connected to a mainframe. Now they're conversing with a cloud. Information technology is changing rapidly, and now forms an invisible layer that increasingly touches every aspect of our lives. Power grids, traffic control, healthcare, water supplies, food and energy, along with most of the world's financial transactions, all now depend on information technology. An emerging compute model - cloud computing - addresses the explosive growth of internet-connected devices, and complements the increasing presence of technology in today's world. Cloud computing is massively scalable, provides a superior user experience, and is characterised by new, internet-driven economics.

Google Drive Cloud Computing Service Offers Users 5-100 GB of Storage

Follow @SlateViral, Facebook.com/SlateVideo, Watch More: SlateV.com There's a major new weather system moving into cloud computing, and Google Drive—reportedly set to launch this week—would like to blow the others out of the sky. The cloud service promises users 5 gigabytes of storage for free, with up to 100 gigabytes of storage for purchase. Along with storing your data, Gizmodo reports Drive may sport enhanced search engine capabilities. So while Google has been late to the cloud computing game, a sophisticated search tool for sifting through PDF and photo files with ease could give them a leg up against services already on the market, from companies like Apple, Dropbox, and SkyDrive. With more people using cloud computing to share and access files from different devices all the time, Google Drive's release may force tech rival Facebook to consider writing another Instagram-sized check to acquire a service they don't already offer. Whichever cloud you pick, the real question is: How will it mine your data to generate more advertising dollars?

Cloud Computing is Hyped and Overblown, Forrester's ...

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- While cloud computing is bringing enormous power to large and small organizations, the hype around the trend is "over blown," says Forrester VP and Principal Analyst Frank Gillett. I interviewed him on Wednesday afternoon on the MIT campus. He told me that the whole movement has lead to "cloud envy" with companies branding existing services by "cloud washing" -- using "cloud spray," he says. Earlier this month he published a report on the subject. Seems like Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is one of big skeptics over the cloud gazing, as Dan Farber over at CNET News.com writes tonight. Dan moderated a panel on cloud computing earlier this week at Technology Review EmTech conference. Larry Dignan at ZDNet wrote earlier this month that cloud computing as a term has become meaningless. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

How Cloud Computing is Forcing Us to Rethink Data Security

Traditional IT security models focus on building a secure perimeter around corporate infrastructure. This is akin to the classic fortress mentality of putting up walls and surrounding those walls with additional defenses. If anything gets inside the walls, all bets are off. HP Enterprise & Cloud Security Strategist, Rafal Los, argues that this model is flawed and should be changed with or without cloud computing. Cloud computing amplifies the issue, because the concept of boundraies has changed, necessitating the switch to role-based security. One key area where this change needs to happen is in rethinking application development with a focus on authorization to access data, rather than simply authenticating access to data. LockerGnome's Jake Ludington has an interesting coversation with Rafal about cloud security, what's the same, what's different, and what some best practice scenarios involve in planning for security in the cloud.

Private Cloud Computing

Private Cloud Computing Private cloud is an infrastructure operated solely for a single organisation, whether managed internally or by a third-party and hosted internally or externally. Two critical characteristics differentiate private clouds from conventional data centers: the ability to pay only as you use services and the ability to scale usage up or down on demand. Cloud Computing Security

Cloud Computing Security Dr. James Walden kosh.nku.edu Cloud computing is an emerging paradigm for large scale web application deployment. While cloud computing may reduce the complexity and costs of web application deployment, it also introduces new risks and requires a fundamentally different approach to security. Traditional security approaches such as firewalls and network intrusion detection are either impossible or inappropriate for cloud applications. New risks include loss of governance, failure of compliance with regulations that assume infrastructure is physical rather than virtual, an expanded attack surface resulting from the connection between your organization and the cloud, and hypervisor attacks that may enable attackers on the same physical server to access your data. This talk will address how these risks occur in the context of cloud computing and will examine ways to mitigate them. www.irongeek.com
