Review by Robert Taylor: A solid effort that has been dismissed based upon its associations with two Cobham lemons, Simplicity of Expression: Depth of Thought and BC, all recorded around the same time. This recording finds Cobham continuing to explore the funk genre; however, the overall mood here is quite darker and more introspective, similar to Crosswinds. "Inner Conflicts" is a haunting song that includes Cobham's experimentation with electronic percussion and synthesizer. "Nickles and Dimes" is a page out of Cobham's early work, while "El Barrio" is heavily influenced by African rhythms. Of note, Prince's former sidekick Sheila E. performs here with her father Pete. The closer, "Arroyo," is another of Cobham's memorable compositions that he continues to perform.

The selections team him with guitarist John Abercrombie, both of the Brecker Brothers, trombonist Garnett Brown, keyboardist George Duke, bassist John Williams, and Latin percussionist Lee Pastora. In general, the melodies and the vamps are reasonably memorable. Cobham also takes an unaccompanied drum solo on "Storm." Worth searching for by fusion collectors.

Review by Robert Taylor: This is Billy Cobham's third solo recording under his own name and is a fine follow-up to Crosswinds. The mini-suite "Solarization" not only showcases the band's technical abilities, but also Cobham's strong compositional skills. It also features a schizophrenic piano solo ("Second Phase") from the underrated pianist Milcho Leviev, who sounds like a mutation of Cecil Taylor and Bill Evans. The funky "Moon Germs," on which John Abercrombie is pushed to inspiring new heights, became a Cobham classic. "The Moon Ain't Made of Green Cheese" is a beautiful flugelhorn solo by Randy Brecker backed by Cobham's debut on piano. The band stretches out on the lengthy "Sea of Tranquility," while "Last Frontier" is a gratuitous drum solo. This recording is highly recommended as Cobham still sounds inspired.

Based on Billy Cobham's Melodic Lick/Fill Idea, the hi-hat is replaced with a cowbell sound (just for fun) and the double-kick is filling in the upbeats to the 32nd notes while the hands play the 16ths (1e+a 2e+a etc.). The left hand pattern is a grouping of 3 on the "e" and "ah" of the beat, while the right hand plays a grouping of 4 in 8th notes. Put them together, and you have a 16th note pattern that resolves after 6 beats, which can be felt as 6/4 time. After that, add in the upbeats to the 32nd notes with the double-kick to fill out the pattern and create a continuous hands to feet 32nd note roll. NOTE: I do gradually speed it up as it's going along with the hands to feet roll section. It also sounds best through good stereo headphones or speakers. Stock computer or phone speakers might not do it justice. Also, no audio editing was done, even though it's an electronic kit, I recorded via audio connection and did no moving of notes whatsoever.
