The Excitement of College Wrestling
Artistic Statement: I don't like the fact that a lot of people "judges a book by its cover." Specifically, people tend to not take part in certain sports because of what they see in the first few seconds of the sport. One of these sports is college wrestling. I love wrestling; I loved it ever since I started doing it when I was in middle school. Wrestling is something that plays a major factor in not only my life, but also making me who I am today. So when people tell me that wrestling is boring or lame, that really gets to me. Back in high school, and even at American, there would be about 90 individuals in the stand; whereas basketball and volleyball games get at least a few hundred individuals. In addition, a lot people have told me that wrestling is one of the most boring sports they have ever watched. All they say is that there is too much hand-fighting and nothing else. Well, they are just plain wrong and this video will show them all. With the use of this video, I'm going to show the people what makes wrestling so interesting, so exciting that it would be far off boring. First, I'm gonna show what people look at specifically that gets the idea in their heads that wrestling is boring. Then I'm gonna show footage that shows wrestling at its most exciting moments. Senior Iowa State University wrestler Kevin Jackson faces Oklahoma Freshman, Eric Messner. This is an entire College Wrestling match from 1987, as seen on Iowa Public Television. Kevin Jackson has returned to Iowa State University as its coach, as of May of 2009. From 2001-2008, he was head coach of the US Freestyle national team, helping to coach Cael Sanderson and Henry Cejudo to gold medals. He has been an Olympic gold medalist (1992 -freestyle 180.5 lbs.), World freestyle champion (1991, 1995). In 1987, he took second in the NCAA championships (for ISU). 1946 College Wrestling Championship Finals
Archival footage from the 1946 NCAA College Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) at Gallagher Hall in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The 1946 tournament was the first since 1942, as the tournament was halted from 1943-45 with the outbreak of war. Following World War II, the NCAA tournament returned, as did the Aggies. Oklahoma A&M hosted the tournament in 1946, winning its 14th NCAA Championship, and its seventh straight. David Arndt, back for his senior season, captured his third NCAA individual championship, this time at 136 pounds. George Dorsch also claimed a title, winning the 175-pound weight class. College wrestler paralyzed in March, walks at graduation in May
Dan Bishop was living the life of a normal, college student-athlete at the University of Buffalo. His wrestling season was nearing an end, and as a senior, he was looking ahead to a good-paying job in New York City. But then disaster struck in March as Bishop wrestled in the 125-lb. semifinals in the Mid-America Conference championships. He fell on his head and suffered a spinal cord injury, and underwent emergency surgery. Doctors hoped that Bishop would be able to walk within a year. Bishop surprised them by walking this past weekend at the Buffalo commencement. "I said, 'I'm going to do it, you watch,'" Bishop said of walking at graduation. "I got rid of the walker and here we are." Just a week and a half after Bishop's injury, his father posted a video of Bishop in a hospital bed, barely moving his legs. Just two months later, Bishop was able to walk because of intense physical therapy.
