Colonialism in 10 Minutes: The Scramble For Africa

An excerpt from the film Uganda Rising showing in a (very!) brief overview the utter decimation of Africa that took place via colonialism and the so-called "Scramble For Africa." Despite the film's focus on Uganda, I think this excerpt sheds light on just how much of the violence that we see today actually has a colonial/European precedent rooted in exploitation and racism. It's also an instructive lead in, I think, to Darfur in 10 Minutes: An Overview of the Conflict in Sudan. Uganda Rising was produced by Alison Lawton. It was directed by Jesse James Miller and Pete McCormack (me). Jesse also edited the film, and I wrote it. For more about the film, visit www.ugandarising.com.

Economic Colonialism - India

Nov 1995 Cheap labour and the end of archaic restrictions have spawned a new entrepreneurial era. In Bombay's factories, thanks to foreign investment, they are finally carting away the Dickensian machinery of the British Empire. But Hindu fundamentalists denounce this as 'economic colonialism' and are as keen to expel the multinationals from India as they are to quash the minority Muslims. At a Hindu festival, extremists excite racial and religious tensions as crowds of young Hindus wheel a freshly painted effigy of Ganesh, the traditional vanquisher of foreign foes, into the Arabian sea. In the quiet village of Veldur where buffaloes loll in the waves, fishermen moan about a new site for ENRON, an American multinational. Dependent on mangoes, fish and cashew nuts, villagers dread the devastation associated with industrial development. This local discontent is one more political skirmish in the battle for India's commercial future. Despite widespread social tension, India's leaders have decided that foreign investment is indispensable. As India mobilises to catch up with the West, Veldur will become the first casualty of many. Fela Kuti on Colonial mentality

Fela Kuti interview subtitled. I made this edit for my high school students in Los Angeles. I subtitled the video so that they would clearly understand what he is saying. I first heard Fela as a young teenager and learned a lot from his songs. In this song Fela is being Sarcastic of the Democracy (new Christianity) which Europeans (USA) use to justify their continued colonialism just as they are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. I also changed the word F--- and narrowed the image as to not show the cigarette so that I can show it in school. Thank you for all you comments

The New Colonialism

Historians teach colonialism is a thing of the past. We are told wars of conquest, occupation, dominance & the theft of land, labor & resources in the name of Imperial Empire no longer pertain to our Post Colonial era. This video describes how the old colonial powers use the World Bank & IMF to continue to colonize the so called underdeveloped world with globalization, free trade & "structural adjustment." The phrase "structural adjustment" would win an Academy Award if propagandist had their own night of awards.

Studying Post-Colonial Africa

The post-colonial state in Africa has a dismal record of providing justice, economic opportunity and social welfare to its citizens and is widely unpopular. Why then has it hung on so tenaciously for so long? Ebenezer Obadare, assistant professor of sociology at KU, studies the numerous factors involved in this question. He will also present a lecture regarding his research on the topic Oct. 16 at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Decolonization: "What is Colonial Education?"

Decolonization is an original composition by Brent Blount. All instruments played by Brent Blount. Decolonization is available for purchase at www . brentblount . com www . english . emory . edu . html The decolonization process In order to eliminate the harmful, lasting effects of colonial education, post-colonial nations or territories must remove the sense of nothingness that is often present. Thiong'o insists that "To decolonize our minds we must not see our own experiences as little islands that are not connected with other processes" (The Global Education Process). Post-colonial education must reverse the former reality of "education as a means of mystifying knowledge and hence reality" (The Global Education Process). A new education structure boosts the identity of a liberated people and unites previously isolated individuals.

Another impact of imperialism was the export of Western values - resource exploitation, consumerism and materialism to the colonies. TEDxRotterdam - Frances Gouda - How the colonial past influences the way we see the world today

Frances Gouda studied history at the University of Washington in Seattle WA. She returned to the Netherlands in 1999 and is now a professor of history and gender studies at the University of Amsterdam. She is the expert on gender issues in post colonial societies. And she is a woman with a clear view on current political discussions. As simplistic thinking seems to spread over Europe like an intellectual tsunami she doesn´t dissociate herself like many other members of the intellectual elite. In the discussion on whether woman should or should not be allowed to wear veils she supplies a much needed perspective. On her TEDxRotterdam performance she defines the place of women in post colonial history, and she also gives perspective and place to us. She defines the way we perceive our own culture, right here and now. What is our position and what are our values? What exactly do we mean when we want some one to adapt to a culture he or she isn't born into? About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
