Colorado Rapids @ Vancouver Whitecaps - 22/10/11 - [Week 32 - Highlights]

VANCOUVER, BC — It wasn't pretty, but the defending MLS Cup champions got the result they came for. Substitute Wells Thomson scored an 84th-minute goal to earn the Colorado Rapids a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in front of a sellout crowd of 21000 at BC Place on Saturday evening. The result secured the Rapids home-field advantage in the club's midweek Wild Card playoff match, while breaking the Caps' three-match winning streak. Entering the match, the Rapids were in danger of being passed by Houston for the second Wild Card position. The three points mean that is no longer possible. Thompson's looping, deflected shot over keeper Joe Cannon broke the deadlock, after Rapids midfielder Jeff Larentowicz had struck the equalizer in the 59th minute with a freekick that should never have found the back of the net. After a relatively quiet first half from both sides, Alain Rochat, named Whitecaps unsung hero of the season prior to kickoff, gave the home side the lead with a bit of a lucky goal in the 49th minute. His curling free kick was intended to find a teammate in the Colorado box, but no one got a head on it. Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens, however, raised his hands as the ball went past him, apparently thinking the ball was going wide before watching it bounce into his net to the delight of the Southsiders supporters group behind him. Ten minutes later came the reply from Larentowicz on an equally egregious play. Jamie Smith teed up his captain ...

Colorado Rapids vs. Toronto FC - 17/09/11 - [Week 26 - Highlights]

TORONTO -- The Colorado Rapids returned to the scene of their MLS Cup 2010 triumph but they still haven't figured out a way to beat Toronto FC at BMO Field, losing 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Toronto kept their slim playoff hopes alive behind a brace from Danny Koevermans inside the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Dutch designated player now has six goals in seven league matches since making his debut as a designated player on July 20. Sanna Nyassi reduced the deficit for Colorado but TFC used a pair of goal-line clearances to hang on for their second straight league win against a playoff contender. The Rapids, who beat FC Dallas 2-1 in extra time in the MLS Cup final held at BMO Field last November, have now lost all five regular season matches played against Toronto FC by a combined score of 11-5. Toronto FC move up to 30 points and with only four matches remaining, they stand just six points away from the final wild card playoff berth occupied by the Portland Timbers. Colorado, who have lost all five matches played in Toronto, are still safe in wild card territory on 41 points. After a quiet first half from both sides, Koevermans showed a goal scorer's instincts on both his second-half tallies. First, he netted an Ashtone Morgan cross in the 52nd minute and then headed home a Nick Soolsma cross on the hour mark. It was a long pass from Eric Avila, which found Morgan on the left flank and the youngster's low cross found Koevermans streaking at the edge of the ...

Colorado Rapids @ Sporting Kansas City - 02/11/11 - [MLS Cup Playoffs]

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Graham Zusi free kicks found the head of Aurélien Collin and CJ Sapong on either side of halftime as Sporting Kansas City defeated the Colorado Rapids 2-0 on Wednesday night at Livestrong Sporting Park to advance to the Eastern Conference finals by an aggregate score of 4-0. Kansas City's victory in front of a sellout crowd of 18565 means they'll move on to face the winner of Houston Dynamo vs. Philadelphia Union on Sunday, Nov. 6, at Livestrong Sporting Park for the opportunity to go to MLS Cup. The defending champion Rapids' season is over as injuries and consecutive losses ended their title defense in the semifinal round. Colorado were missing three starters through injury from the series' first leg at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Scott Palguta, Joseph Nane and Ross LaBauex replaced Drew Moor, Kosuke Kimura and Caleb Folan in Gary Smith's makeshift 11. Sporting made no changes to their starting lineup, although Omar Bravo wasn't included in Peter Vermes' 18-man roster due to a groin strain suffered last week. With wet conditions slowing down play and making intricate build-up difficult, both teams took the first 15 minutes to find their feet and acclimate to the rain-soaked pitch in a physical game that included seven yellow cards between the two teams. Kansas City had the game's first chance in the 16th minute, when Collin's diagonal ball behind the Rapids' back line found Teal Bunbury in space. Colorado Rapids vs. San Jose Earthquakes - 08/13/11 - [WEEK 22 - HIGHLIGHTS]

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Omar Cummings and Sanna Nyassi have proven over the last month that the Colorado Rapids don't need Conor Casey to succeed. Saturday night, Caleb Folan and Jeff Larentowicz proved that the Rapids can do just fine without Cummings and Nyassi in the starting lineup as well. Folan converted his second penalty of the year and Larentowicz scored off a set piece as the Rapids delivered a 2-1 kidney punch to the San Jose Earthquakes' dwindling playoff hopes. The Rapids extended their unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches, capitalizing on an 11-on-10 advantage for the final 40 minutes after the ejection of San Jose's Sam Cronin. Larentowicz got the winner in the 72nd minute, walking onto a stationary ball that had been touched dead off a short free kick. Larentowicz's low, driven shot from 25 yards skipped through the legs of San Jose midfielder Simon Dawkins and off the hand of goalkeeper Jon Busch before reaching the net. Folan had brought Colorado even in the 39th minute when Cronin was whistled for a handball after his arm deflected a cross from Colorado captain Pablo Mastroeni. Despite Joey Gjertsen's opening goal in the 22nd minute, San Jose saw its franchise-record winless streak reach 11 straight games. Gjertsen put San Jose up early when he used a wide-open header to clean up the rebound of Chris Wondolowski's deflected shot. Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens did a great job to parry a left-footed stab by Wondolowski, but Rapids defender Kosuke ...

Colorado Rapids vs Seattle Sounder BROKE LEG INJURY

Friday's match between the Colorado Rapids and Seattle Sounders is going to be remembered for one thing, and one thing only: Steve Zakuani's horrific injury that probably ended his season and very well could impact his career. The speedy midfielder was taken down by a harsh, reckless and late tackle by Brian Mullan, who received a red card. Zakuani's tibia and fibula were broken and he's expected to undergo surgery on Saturday. The Sounders ultimately won the match 1-0 on Fredy Montero's first goal of the season. Mauro Rosales picked up the assist as Montero beat Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens on a ball that didn't look particularly well struck. From there, the Sounders looked like a team that was carrying considerable weight. Despite being a man up, they did not control possession and by the end of the match, were obviously fighting serious fatigue. The Rapids had several chances to equalize, but the Sounders did just enough to secure their first shutout of the season.
