Using basic shapes, we apply the same principle again, this time using a sniper as the subject matter. These are minor exercises in designing dominant shaping by using heavy contrast - and, more importantly, copying the same drawing and starting a new design. After making the first one, I was satisfied with the pose but the arm and weapon placement was sloppy, so I repositioned them to add better interest.

When your sketchmarks start to take shapes of their own, gradually kick up your brush size to fill in lines that should be thicker to indicate a better sense of depth; a default dissolving PS brush is used to put slight underlying dabs of shadow and value * you can make selections of what you'd like to fill and then hit shift + F5 to quickly fill in your desired shape, but for training purposes I kept most hotkey actions out of this one. Apply simple shadow and some thin highlights once you have a fair amount of value built up. / / / / / / / / / 1 small hard-edged ball brush was used and 1 PS dissolving brush was used * mostly to fill in larger shapes of value to help blending. VIDEO DESCRIPTION: Basically the idea for this exercise is to not just 'stop' at conceptualizing one creative form - it's about taking a sketch, or a quick idea you've made, duplicating it, and changing it up to create an entirely different take on the concept. This video is an example of that exercise - 1. Draw out your idea, most of the time, we either completely hate it, or are not satisfied with it in some way. Instead of adding more crap onto your first form - 2. Duplicate it, and make your revisions to that idea. Just play around and see if you can make 2 approaches to the same concept. For me, I tried mainly to design a 'friendly' or neutral animal, and then tried to redesign it's concept by making it hostile, or more threatening. This concept works good with this kind of subject matter. Conceptualizing animals can be very free and refreshing. If you don't usually draw up animals, dig up some reference online and take your time.
