Islamic Crusades 1: The Occupation of Constantinople

NOTE: WHY DO I USE THE WORD "CRUSADE"? In the two years since I posted this series I have received messages from many Christians stating that they are offended by the word "crusade" (a derivation of "cross") being associated with Islamic violence. I chose to use that word because The Crusades are something that most in the post-modern, politically correct West recognize as "evil." Many westerners are still not acquainted with the real meaning of words like "jihad," "shariah," "dhimmis", etc. Hopefully in 2010 more people DO understand the true meaning of those words. In short, I chose the word "crusades" to highlight that Christians were not the only ones who fought religious wars of conquest. My intention was not to insult Christianity. Christianity is a religion of peace that is sometimes used by extremists to justify violence. Islam is a religion of war. I pray for the day when these videos are no longer needed. Until that day I will keep the name "Islamic Crusades." BLOG: occidentalsoapbox.blogspot.com Welcome to Islamic Crusades, Episode 1: The Occupation of Constantinople. In the intro to this series, I quoted Bill Clintons 2001 address in which he cited the Crusades as a root cause for the 9/11 attacks, and specifically singled out the sack of Jerusalem in 1099 as an example of Western brutality that still poisons our relations with the Muslim world today. In this video I will tell the story of the merciless siege, destruction and exploitation of a great Christian ...

Byzantine Empire Hippodrome of Constantinople - Sultanahmet

The Great Hippodrome of the Byzantine Empire. The Hippodrome of Constantinople was a horse-racing track that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire and the largest city in Europe. Today it is a square named Sultanahmet Meydani in the Turkish city of Istanbul, with only a few fragments of the original structure surviving. The word hippodrome comes from the Greek hippos ('ιππος), horse, and dromos (δρομος), path or way. Horse racing and chariot racing were popular pastimes in the ancient world and hippodromes were common features of Greek cities in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. History and use Although the Hippodrome is usually associated with Constantinople's days of glory as an imperial capital, it actually predates that era. The first Hippdrome was built when the city was called Byzantium (Byzantion in Greek), and was a provincial town of moderate importance. In 203 the Emperor Septimius Severus rebuilt the city and expanded its walls, endowing it with a hippodrome, an arena for chariot races and other entertainments. In 324, the Emperor Constantine the Great decided to move the seat of the government from Rome to Byzantium, which he renamed Nova Roma (New Rome). This name failed to impress and the city soon became known as Constantinople, the City of Constantine. Constantine greatly enlarged the city, and one of his major undertakings was the renovation of the Hippodrome. It is estimated that the Hippodrome of ...

1204AD Crusaders Destroy Greek Byzantines Constantinople

1204AD Crusaders Destroy Greek Byzantines Constantinople Crusaders Attack and Destroyed Greek Orthodox Constantinople 1204 AD. They knew that Constantinople was a richer prize than all the Holy Land - and that it could be taken more easily. Constantinople had withstood Moslem armies for 5 centuries, it now fell. The imperial capital was stormed by the very men whose forefathers had promised rescue a century before. Untold treasures of gold, silver, and holy relics were plundered during the subsequent pillage and rape. Literary classics, great and wonderful works of art and treasures untold were either destroyed or carried away. Many of its priceless treasures were carried off to Europe. But the greatest prize of all were the relics. bones, heads and arms of saints. the crown of thorns, St. Thomas, the doubter's finger. The patriarch fled on an ass without a single attendant. Tombs were robbed. Women were outraged. Churches were desecrated. Horses were ridden in the sanctuary. Communion cups and sacred vessels were used as drinking cups in drunken revels. Prostitutes danced on the altar. Icons, even portraits of Christ were used as gaming tables. The Byzantine emperor was murdered by his own people in a revolt. Venice took much of the coast and islands of the Empire, and the crusaders set up a "Latin Empire" with a Latin, Baldwin of Flanders as emperor. Pope Innocent II could express disapproval, but the Greeks were schismatics and heretics so their own rule was set up ...

HERR-The Fall of Constantinople

The city is lost now; there's no time for sleeping We're dying; we're falling; our women are weeping The souls of our children, like bricks and like mortar So helpless and broken, like lambs to the slaughter Enemy! Enemy at the gates! Enemy! Enemy at the gates! Enemy! Enemy at the gates! At the gates! At the gates! The wardrums are pounding a rhythm divine Our soldiers are marching for one final time The rabble approaches, now sensing our fear Barbarian conquest, of all we hold dear [chorus] By Mehmed and Ishak our city is torn Their ships anchored fast off the coast of the Horn Our warriors lie helpless, now covered in flies 'Neath ragged aggressors with greed in their eyes [chorus] We can't match the strength of the Janissaries Anatolian justice, we're brought to our knees Byzantine heroes, struck dumb with awe And labouring under the Saracen claw [chorus]

The Four Lads - Istanbul

PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads between multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics. LINK: tinyurl.com The Four Lads were experts at close harmony and acapella and were very much influenced by Negro spirituals and gospel music. They scored a number of pop Top 100 hits during the early '50s, including "The Mockingbird," "Skokian" (1954), "Moments to Remember" (1955), and "No, Not Much!" and "Standing on the Corner" (both in 1956). Their initial break came while backing Johnny Ray on his early-'50s hits "Cry" and "The Little White Cloud That Cried" for Columbia Records. The Four Lads launched their professional career in 1950, singing in local clubs around Toronto, Canada. All of the original members had been choirboys. Lead vocalist Bernie Toorish, (born John Bernard Toorish on March 2, 1931) had grown up in a musical family and began performing from the age of three. In elementary school, he studied violin and as an eighth grader at St. Michael Choir School, greatly impressed by the Golden Gate Quartet, he had already been performing gospel and church music with a group called the Jordanaires (not the backing vocalists for Elvis Presley). (Later, two of the singers later helped form the Crew Cuts.) In addition to Toorish, the group included James Arnold (first tenor), Connie Codarini (bass), and Frank Busseri (baritone). The Jordanaires later changed their name to the Four Dukes and ...

Hagia Sophia - Constantinople : The future ORTHODOX cathedral after 600 years of turkish occupation

www.orthodoxphotos.com Hagia Sophia (Άγια Σοφία in Greek), the Church of Holy Wisdom, known variously as Sancta Sophia in Latin, is an ancient cathedral of the Church of Constantinople located in modern-day Istanbul, Turkey. It was converted to a mosque by the Turks and is now used as a museum. It is universally acknowledged as one of the great buildings of the world and a reference point in history of architecture. (The church is sometimes mistakenly called "Saint Sophia," as though it were named for a saint called Sophia.) www.esphigmenou.com The first great church on the site was built by Constantius II, the son of Constantine the Great, but was burned down during the Nika riots of 532. The building was rebuilt in its present form between 532 and 537 under the personal supervision of emperor Justinian the Great. It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Of great artistic value was its decorated interior with mosaics and marble pillars and coverings. The temple itself was so richly and artistically decorated that Justinian is believed to have said Νενίκηκά σε Σολομών: "Solomon, I have surpassed you!" The architects of the church were Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles, professors of geometry at the University of Constantinople. Justinian's basilica was at once the culminating architectural achievement of late antiquity and the first masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Its influence, both architecturally and liturgically, was ...

Constantinople never fell...The Legend of the Immortal King Constantine Palaiologos!

Believe it or not...This is about the legend of the Immortal king, Constantine Palaiologos, the last Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire better known as the Byzantine Empire in modern times. He was the final defender of the 1000 year old Christian Empire of the Greeks and was last seen at the walls of Constantinople fighting off the Turkish invaders on that fateful day on the 29th of May 1453, when Constantinople fell. He died in a manner fitting a Greek ruler, defending his country and fighting for the freedom of his people just like the Spartan king Leonidas and many others did before him. His body was never found, and the legend of the Immortal (frozen) king was born. The king who at the moment of his death was taken away by the Virgin Merry or an Angel, turned immortal and hidden in a cave in deep sleep until the preordained time comes, when he will rise again and drive the Turkish invaders out of Constantinople and Asia Minor and all the way to a place called "The red Apple tree"... www.marmaromenosauto... http
