This is a River North Dance Chicago rehearsal of "SUPER STRAIGHT is coming down" (1989); choreographed by Daniel Ezralow and with an original score by contemporary Dutch composer Thom Willems. Ezralow's movement and choreographic concepts were influenced by the Robert Longo's 1979 book of photo stills: "Men in Cities." The Reason I Left Mullingar - Pat Cooksey
Beautiful song written by Pat Cooksey, and which soon became one of my first passions regarding this tradition of ballad. I love the story that it tells and the real problems it evokes and the way the consequences of those problems are depicted... that mavellous line "And when the pay's finished on Monday friend's not a friend any more." How poignant and desolate, and so often true. I have changed the musical line at the end of each verse. Cooksey wanted it in a minor tone, but I needed the major version to lead into the harmonies of the refrain. I may redo the Cooksey way if enough people complain (there are bound to be a few... Just do it nicely please)! There is also one chord that I changed from minor to major (Em to G) towards the end (in the chorus). This was not because the Cooksey music did not pelase me (I adore it), but I wanted to lift the end a little. The song remains a marvellous piece of writing and composition and any liberties I have taken are simply to produce something that suits my rendition. Like I said, if too many people decide I have done an injustice I shall return to the drawing board. The flute bridge was not my creation... some of you will recognise it from another singer's interpretation of this song. Thank you Pat Cooksey for this gem of a song. I have a hand-written note from you here in front of me, written on the 13th April this year (2009) and I treasure it, as I do the prospect of meeting you.

MEGA SID tune from 1988 !! !! Not sure if it's a cover as some of Mark Cooksey's tracks were. Any info on that would be grand. If it's a cover/"inspired by", then it's a great effort, if it's his own original composition then I think it stands up there with the great masterpieces of SID music. 886. The Sick Note (Pat Cooksey)
The original title of this song is "Paddy and the Barrel." It was written in 1969, to the tune of "The Garden Where the Praties Grow," by Pat Cooksey, who first performed it in The Dyers Arms in Coventry. In 1972 Sean Cannon, who later became a member of the Dubliners, started performing it in folk clubs using the title "The Sick Note". It has been recorded more than a hundred times under more than twenty different titles, including "Dear Boss" (The Clancy Brothers), "Murphy and the Bricks" (Noel Murphy) and "The Bricklayers Song" (The Corries and Ray Stevens). It is interesting that in all these performances, it is only the title that has been changed. The lyrics have always remained as Cooksey wrote them. The story on which the song is based goes back in some form to the English music halls of the 1920's and a version was published in the Readers Digest in 1937. The best known spoken performance of the story is a reading of the bricklayer's letter by humorist, Gerard Hoffnung, in a celebrated address he gave to the Oxford Union. A recording of this speech was my introduction to the story. It was only much later that I found, to my surprise that Hoffnung's hilarious letter had been turned into a song. Bobbie Leecan & Robert Cooksey - Blue Harmonica (1926)
Guitarist Bobby Leecan played in a country blues duo with harmonica player Robert Cooksey, the two East Coast bluesmen hardly playing the style straight out of the book. There was more than just a trace of ragtime influence, and even some subversive swing jazz influence. From the mid-'20s to the early '30s, these sorts of pseudo-country blues players were just as much a part of the fledgling big city recording scene as the jazz players, and were often encouraged to mingle. Sometimes sessions involved interesting combinations completely out of serendipity, because players who were coming and going happened to run into each other and hit it off. The recordings Waller made playing the organ are cherished by his fans, and Leecan is the guitarist on a batch of these numbers that were recorded in 1927. The combo at this session was organized by cornetist and bandleader Thomas Morris, and also featured drummer Eddie King and the flamboyant trombonist Jimmy Archey. The guitarist was also a member of Waller's Six Hot Babies, also with Morris as well as Joe Nanton on trombone and the interesting pianist Nat Shillkret. Leecan's harmonica partner, Cooksey, was based out of New York, and was unique in his clean approach to the harp. This does not mean he washed the insides of the instrument out - but that he favored a clear tone without utilizing many sound effects, more similar to Larry Adler than Sonny Boy Williamson.
