Mourners packed the streets around Cairo's St. Mark's Cathedral on Sunday to pay final respects to the man who for many Egyptian Christians was the only spiritual leader they ever knew. Pope Shenouda III died on Saturday at 88 after leading the Coptic Church for four decades, overseeing an impressive worldwide expansion but, after returning from internal exile in the 1980s, rarely clashing with the government. With Christians, roughly 10 per cent of Egypt's population, worried about the new Islamist-dominated parliament, the church's next leader will face a complex challenge. Liturgical chant of the Coptic Orthodox Church "Hos Erouf" A curious custom of the Coptic Church is the liturgy that prays and sings it in Coptic, the original language of ancient Egypt. The Church keeps alive the language of the pharaohs, which was written in hieroglyphics, hieratic and demotic and now a modified version of the Greek alphabet, Egyptian written in Greek and demotic (the Copt) was gradually being forgotten, lost ground to the Arabic and thus became incomprehensible. However, the Coptic Church preserved the ancient Egyptian language by tradition thanks to its rites. Many wept openly during the ceremony at St Mark's Cathedral in Cairo. Bishop Bakhomious led the service and will now also lead the eight million Egyptian Copts until a new pope is elected - a procedure that could take two months. The funeral congregation included a delegation from the Vatican and several candidates for Egypt's upcoming presidential election. Enthroned in 1971, Pope Shenouda's efforts to promote religious harmony earned him wide respect, even within the Muslim majority. But his job had become increasingly difficult, especially following the New Year's Day bombing of a church in Alexandria in which 23 people were killed. Pope Shenouda was due to be buried at the St Bishoy Monastery, northwest of Cairo, according to his wishes. He was banished to the monastery by then Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for several years in the 80s after criticising the government. Egypt is in mourning for the patriarch of the Coptic Church, Pope Shenouda, who died Saturday at the age of 88. As VOA's Elizabeth Arrott reports from Cairo, the Coptic community is preparing for his funeral and a future made more uncertain by the political ascendancy of Islamists.

"Egypt's 10 million Coptic orthodox Christians are mourning the death of their religious leader, Pope Shenouda III. He'd been head of the church for 40 years and was seen as an important protector of the faith." Christian mourners gathered Sunday for mass, where the Pope's body was on display seated in the Papal chair and dressed in ceremonial garb. Many Muslims also mourned the Pope, who was seen as a unifying figure. A writer for Al Arabiya explains. "He strongly defended Arab causes, especially the right of the Palestinian people to an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. 'We will not enter Jerusalem again, until we go hand-in-hand with our Muslim and Arab brothers,' he once emphatically declared." Shenouda advocated for greater recognition for Egypt's Coptic minority, but he stood against more hardline elements of the group. He resisted calls for military intervention to protect Coptic rights, for example. Al Jazeera says, he sometimes took even more unpopular stances. "During the revolution, the Pope spoke out against the uprising. ... And again, when there were protests against attacks on Copts after the revolution, the Pope urged Copts to go home and stop demonstrating." Air Sinai has launched a new route to shuttle Coptic Christians between Egypt and Israel, allowing pilgrims to visit their most holy sites for the first time in decades. The development comes in the wake of the death of Patriarch Shenouda III, the head of the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church, who for decades prohibited Copts from traveling to Jerusalem and other sites due to the "Israeli occupation." According to sources at Cairo International Airport, 208 Coptic Christians arrived in Israel on Friday, and were expected to visit Christian holy sites ahead of Easter, celebrated on April 15.
