Blood Meridian - The Judge on War ("War is God") - Cormac McCarthy

Excerpt from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. This is the scene where the Judge and his companions are resting around a camp fire. Judge Holden gives his view on war (awesome speech!): "The good book says that he that lives by the sword shall perish by the sword, said the black. The judge smiled, his face shining with grease. What right man would have it any other way? he said. The good book does indeed count war an evil, said Irving. Yet there's many a bloody tale of war inside it. It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way. He turned to Brown, from whom he'd heard some whispered slur or demurrer. Ah, Davy, he said. It's your own trade we honor here. Why not rather take a small bow. Let each acknowledge each. My trade? Certainly. What is my trade? War. War is your trade. Is it not? And it ain't yours? Mine too. Very much so. What about all them notebooks and bones and stuff? All other trades are contained in that of war. Is that why war endures? No. It endures because young men love it and old men love it in them. Those that fought, those that did not. That's your notion. The judge smiled. Men are born for games. Nothing else. Every child knows that play is nobler than work. He knows too that the worth or merit of a game ...

Thursday - As He Climbed the Dark Mountain

From the Thursday/Envy split EP Track 1 Lyrics: I've watched him walk away To climb the endless shadow side. I've watched him holding on. It was a thousand years, a thousand miles, a thousand dreams, A thousand endings with no goodbye. He disappeared from me As he climbed the highest peak of the dark mountain. Let the mountain sleep in the past with all our bad dreams. Was it a metaphor For all the subtle ways that we'd grown apart? Was it mortality Climbing him blind right off the edge of his life Into the hands of a loving god? Or a raging void where we get torn apart? With his hands in the air, Was he laughing or dancing Or only just trying to wave goodbye? Did he say a prayer for me As he climbed the highest peak of the dark mountain? Let the mountain fall. Strike me down until I can't go on. Right now, let me fall down Under the ground. Do we go on alone? It felt like a thousand years. It was a thousand miles away.

Blood Meridian - "Glanton and the Campfire" - Cormac McCarthy

Excerpt from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. In this scene Glanton stares into the campfire, during which time McCarthy poetically describes Glanton's destiny. The wording/phrasiology used by McCarthy here is incredible; almost biblical in style.
