Season 1 Episode 3 : The Crocodile Inside Nature's Giants dissects the largest animals on the planet to uncover their evolutionary secrets. Most wildlife documentaries tell you how an animal behaves, but by dissecting the animal and studying its anatomy we can we can see how an animal works. Experts in comparative anatomy, evolution and behaviour will put some of the most popular and enigmatic large animals under the knife. Veterinary scientist, Mark Evans, will interpret their findings, biologist Simon Watts tests the animals' physiology in the field and Richard Dawkins traces back the animals' place on the tree of life. The team uncovers the crocodile's incredible jaw muscles, as biologist Simon Watt travels to Florida to test the huge strength of the massive reptile's bite: the most powerful in the animal kingdom. But while crocodiles' spiked teeth are excellent for gripping prey as they plunge into a death roll, they are useless for chewing. So how do these animals manage to digest large chunks of raw meat and bone? As the experts dissect the digestive system and inspect the stomach contents for clues, they reveal the bizarre plumbing between the heart and the stomach that might provide the key to this puzzle. And they also solve the mystery of this crocodile's premature death.

World's Largest Crocodile Captured

LIMITED TIME ONLY! Jasmine V App $1.99 mhlo.co Wildlife authorities in the Philippines say they have captured a 21-foot-long, 2370-pound saltwater crocodile, thought to be the largest creature of its kind now in captivity. The croc was captured in Agusan del Sur marsh on the southern Philippine island of Mindinao, according to a report on GMA News and has been blamed for a pair of fatal attacks . Hunters had been trying to capture it for 21 days, the report said. It was finally captured on Saturday by a team of about 30 men who used meat to bait it and an eight millimeter metal cable to snare it. The beast was caught in a creek by villagers who had lived in fear of it for more than 20 years. The monster-sized reptile is estimated to be at least 50 years old — saltwater crocodiles can live up to 100. Edwin Cox Elorde, mayor of the remote town of Bunawan near where the croc was caught, said the reptile will become the star of a nature park there, according to the AFP report. "The villagers, of course, are very happy that they have been able to turn this dangerous crocodile from a threat into an asset. He's a problem crocodile that needs to be taken from the wild ... and used for eco-tourism," Mayor Elorde told reporters. The previous largest crocodile in captivity is an 18-footer in Australia, according to Guinness World Records. Despite the capture of the 21-foot-long, one ton reptile, many other large crocodiles remain in the rivers and the local villagers have been told ...

Huge killer crocodile caught

By JIM GOMEZ, Associated Press MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Relieved Filipino villagers threw a fiesta when they captured a one-ton crocodile, with about 100 people pulling the feared beast from a creek by rope then hoisting it by crane onto a truck. The party may have been premature. After the 20-foot (6.1-meter) saltwater crocodile was caught over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday an even bigger killer crocodile may lurk in creeks of the remote southern region. The crocodile — weighing 2370 pounds (1075 kilograms) and estimated to be at least 50 years old — is the biggest caught alive in the Philippines in recent years. Wildlife officials were trying to confirm whether it was the largest such catch in the world, said Theresa Mundita Lim of the government's Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau. It was captured alive after a three-week hunt in Bunawan township in Agusan del Sur province, where villagers have been terrified. A child was killed two years ago in the township by a crocodile that was not caught, and a croc is suspected of killing a fisherman missing since July. Villagers witnessed a crocodile killing a water buffalo last month. Bunawan villagers celebrated after they caught the crocodile. "It was like a feast, so many villagers turned up," Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said. Wildlife official Ronnie Sumiller, who has hunted "nuisance crocodiles" for 20 years and led the team behind the capture in Bunawan, said a search was under way for a possibly larger crocodile ...
