The weather conditions I used were very severe but with practice a landing (even if it is hard!) can be done. Take off at 9 knots gusting xwc. Followed by 55 and mostly turbulent minutes towards my destination. On approach to landing wind was directly across runway and gusting to 18 knots. Cessna 172 POH only ever mentioned 15 knots demonstrated xwc. Hmm.. Not much of the runway ahead: 18x600. Will the insurance pay for any damage? The thermals and surface turbulence could be guessed and generally dies closer to the ground. Not the gusting winds. The most tricky ones just start when controls are mashy. So let's see how far down can we go before variometer becomes gusted. (watching it in HD 480+ also check the 30 knot rated windsock on the apron in the full up position) Got away, then was tempted for another try, but since I was piloting along for an hour in turbulence and had to carry on an hour return, decided to save my energy and head for a windy landing at home. On the Video: Taxi - checking the latest wind at destination 180@12 xvc 12 Take off - departure xwc 9 and gusts Cruise - all smooth above 2000 Descend - getting bumpy below 2000 wind at destination 180@14 xwc 14 Long Final 07 - 150@18 xwc 18 Final - 150@12 then ATC warns: wind 150 presently 10 occasionally 18 knots xwc up to 18 Over the Runway - 30 knot rated windsock fully up and points across The lessons learnt: static-x-winds and gust-x-winds are different animals. A 10 kt gust, if waved, changes wind +10 kt to -10 kt momentarily, loosing you 20 kt, if sideways then initiating a feather roll, in no particular order <b>...</b>

This final episode discusses numerous hazards that can threaten an otherwise solid approach when a crosswind condition is present. Since most approaches and landings are executed during some kind of crosswind situation, it is advised that each pilot use this episode to review crosswind landing techniques to really hone their crosswind skills and hopefully avoid crosswind hazards such as touching down in a crab, the dreaded ground-loop and/or experiencing a wing rise after touchdown.
