Longest bus queue ever? (Croydon landslide bus queue)
This is a video of full length of the nightmarish queue for the rail replacement bus service outside East Croydon station as it was at about 6.30 pm on 1st August 2011. The railway was completely closed due to the landslide which occurred just south of the station. I heard that it was a two-hour wait to reach the front of the queue. Many thanks to the lady and gent who gave me a lift to Purley to save me from this painful queuing experience. I took five hours to get home. Many commiserations to those who took even longer.

Cycling through Croydon at 8pm on Mon 08-Aug-2011, just before the riots really kicked off. The police have cordoned off streets, and most shops have closed early. Saw a looter blatantly stealing a bike, with a police car nearby. In south London, officers were nowhere to be seen as shopfronts were smashed in St John's Road, Clapham Junction. But the gangs of youths were prevented from carrying on their rampage south into Northcote Road, site of restaurants - specialist food stores and boutiques - by locals who guarded the top of the street from a branch of Nando's to the Northcote pub. A core of 20 people gathered at the junction, with up to 50 at some points, from just after 9pm until close to 11pm. John Comyn, who has lived in the area all his life, said: "Most people I spoke to were local and couldn't believe what was happening. No one wanted to venture down St John's Road but we weren't going to let them ruin our street.

'Rioters will lynch journalists if police get access to raw footage'
London Metropolitan police have reportedly urged British media outlets to hand over footage of the riots that swept the capital in early August voluntarily, without recourse to official procedures. Police say the images could help them identify criminals, and have vowed to obtain the footage through court action if the broadcasters and newspapers do not comply. Officers have been approaching media corps privately, appealing to their sense of social responsibility. According to the Guardian newspaper, the police want to get their hands on all the material British newspapers and broadcasters have shot, regardless of whether the material has been published or not. CROYDON AIRPORT 1938
This was shot by my father Ronald Redburn in 1938. His local cine club visited Croydon Airfield. It was that year that the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had flown back to there after his meeting with Hitler at Munich. The camera was a Keystone and the film was Kodak 8mm. My father was one of the first 8mm users in the UK. He could get color film at trade price from someone he knew who owned a local shop for the same cost as the same number of minutes of 9.5mm which was the usual armature film stock of the period.

House of Reeves is a family-run furniture retailer in Croydon, south London, England. The store was found in 1867 as Ye Olde Curiositie Shoppe on Church Street—opposite the Croydon Parish Church—by Edwin Reeves, a barrel maker from Sherbourne, Dorset. He passed the business to his son, William. The store's name was changed after World War II to E. Reeves Ltd., and was passed to William Jr., then to Maurice Reeves, the company chairman as of 2011.The business is run by Maurice's sons, Trevor and Graham, and another director, David Barnes.Another of Edwin Reeves' great-great-grandsons is Marc Reeves, former editor of the Birmingham Post. The store became known as the House of Reeves, and in the 1970s the corner on which it is located was listed in the London A to Z as Reeves Corner. It is served by Reeves Corner tram stop. According to The Daily Telegraph, the building was one of the few in Croydon that survived the Luftwaffe's attacks during World War II. One of the company's two adjacent stores was razed to the ground by an arson attack during the 2011 England riots on 8 August 2011. Trevor Reeves vowed that the company, which employs 15 people, would remain in business.

Following the Brighton line 150 celebrations and open weekend at Lovers Walk depot, the steam exhibits make their way (I think) to Southall shed. The locos paused at East Croydon for about 20 minutes for general checks. Supposedly in "light steam" the class 33 should have be hauling them, See what you think!
