Saint-Saens : The Swan ( Le Cygne ) - Carnival of the Animals

Title : Saint-Saens : The Swan From Wikipedia: Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the thirteenth movement of The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. This piece features a solo cello in tenor clef and two accompaniment pianos. The piece is in 6/4 time, with a key signature of G major. It makes use of legato and slurring, the music should flow like a swan gliding through the water. This piece is often played using much vibrato. This is the only movement from the Carnival of the Animals that the composer would allow to be played in public during his lifetime as he thought the remaining movements were too frivolous and would damage his reputation as a serious composer. The piece was written in tenor clef, although there are some arrangements in bass clef. Because the high range of the cello is displayed in this piece, the voice is often misnamed as the violin. The cello, however, has an extremely large range and can play in this register, and its tones are rounder and more mellow..

Camille Saint-Saens - La Cygne ( The Swan)

The Swan ( Le Cygne) By French Composer Camille Saint-Saens. Conducted By John Williams and the Boston Pops. From The CD" Pops In Love" Including pictures of rare beautiful Black Swans. Sea Birds and Oil Spills Seabirds are strongly affected by oil spills. A seabird may get covered in the oil. The thick black oil is too heavy for the birds to fly, so they attempt to clean themselves. The bird then eats the oil to clean its feathers and poisons itself. If workers have found sea birds that are not dead because of oil, they will take the birds to a cleaning center or captivity where they are kept in a facility because they can not live in the wild on their own. Animals that are in captivity because of an oil spill will be cleaned by professionals and volunteers. When a bird is in captivity, the oil will be flushed from its eyes, intestines, and feathers. The bird will be examined for any more injuries like broken bones, and it will take a medicine to prevent any more damage. After the bird seems healthier, it will take a test on its abilities to float in the water and keep water away from its body. As soon as the bird passes its test, it will soon be let out into the wild.

Camille Saint-Saëns - The Swan

Le Carnaval des Animaux (The Carnival of the Animals) is a musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Le Carnaval was composed in February 1886 while Saint-Saëns was vacationing in a small Austrian village. It was originally scored for a chamber group of flute, clarinet, two pianos, glass harmonica, xylophone, two violins, viola, cello and double bass, but is usually performed today with a full orchestra of strings, and with a glockenspiel substituting for the rare glass harmonica. Saint-Saëns, apparently concerned that the piece was too frivolous and likely to harm his reputation as a serious composer, suppressed performances of it and only allowed one movement, Le Cygne, to be published in his lifetime. Only small private performances were given for close friends like Franz Liszt. Saint-Saëns did, however, include a provision which allowed the suite to be published after his death, and it has since become one of his most popular works. It is a favorite of music teachers and young children, along with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Le Cygne (The Swan) Two pianos and cello: This is by far the most famous movement of the suite, often performed sole and is used to showcase the interpretive skills of the cellist. The lushly romantic cello solo is played over rippling sixteenths in one piano and rolled chords in the other. [from Wikipedia] Artwork:Leonora Carrington

Cherkassky plays Saint-Saëns / Godowsky "Le Cygne"

Transcription by Godowsky in 1927, recording by Cherkassky in 1956. ~ "Leopold Godowsky" speaks: I worked honestly with the highest ideals for my chosen art and beloved instrument. I have accomplished in my field more and greater things than all my contemporary colleagues. Yet real recognition and material benefits were not given to me; but crediting me sparingly and grudgingly, my life ebbed, and now I find myself ill and poor. A few know the importance of my having lived. When I am but a memory my works and my influence will begin to live... Theremin - ''The Swan'' (Le Cygne) from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens

A theremin performance of 'The Swan'' (Le Cygne) from The Carnival of the Animals (Carnaval des Animaux) by Camille Saint-Saens. This piece, usually played on the cello, (and often performed in ballet as ''The Dying Swan''), is a classical favourite of many thereminists, and is played here on a Wavefront Classic theremin. I'm heading swiftly towards the end of my 15th month of learning to play the theremin, so, once again, I've uploaded a video of me playing ''The Swan'' which is something I've done regularly since the start. I find that returning to a piece I've played fairly often helps me assess my advancement (or lack of it ... I dont find this an easy piece!) My aim has been to eventually play a version of this piece that comes as close as possible to the sound of the cello; I think this is the closest I've managed so far, although, as always, there's still room for improvement! WHAT IS A THEREMIN? The theremin was invented by Professor Leon Theremin duing the late 1920's, and is the only musical instrument played without being touched. Its circuitry includes two radio frequency oscillators; one at a fixed rate, the frequency of the other determined by the thereminist's right hand (acting as the grounded plate of a variable capacitor) as it moves beside the upright antenna; this controls the pitch. The difference between the two frequencies creates audio signals heard via an amplifier. Using a similar principle, the left hand's proximity to the loop antenna modulates ...

Pierre Fournier,Saint-Saëns The Swan (Le cygne)

www.facebook.com Pierre Fournier-violoncello, Gerald Moore-piano (rec. 1947).Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) was born in Paris on June 24, and known in his lifetime as "the aristocrat of cellists," because of his lyrical playing, and for his impeccable artistic sensitivity. Fournier was the son of a French army general, and as a child was taught piano by his mother. At the age of nine he suffered a mild case of polio, and lost some of the dexterity in his legs and feet. No longer able to master the use of the piano pedals, he searched for another musical instrument, and turned to the cello. He quickly made good progress on his new instrument, and was able to win entrance to the Paris Conservatoire, where he became a pupil of Paul Bazelaire, and later Anton Hekking. He graduated at the age of seventeen, in the year 1923. Maurice Marechal called him "the cellist of the future." Even at such a young age, Fournier had tremendous virtuosity, and was famous for his bowing facility. Fournier was a friend of another great French cellist, Tortelier. Once, meeting backstage after a recital by Tortelier, Pierre said to him, "Paul, I wish I had your left hand." Tortelier replied, "Pierre, I wish I had your right arm!" Fournier became well known in 1925 after a successful performance with the Edouard Colonne Orchestra in Paris, and began to give concerts all over Europe. Fournier played with all the great musicians of his time, including Cortot, Thibaud, Furtwangler, Karajan and Kubelik ...
