Over the course of the last year and half I've used quit a number of DSLR rigs before settling on this configuration. There are a few tweaks that still need to be made to this design before I would call it perfect, but for its price range it is a very well made device. Pros: Light weight, Carbon fiber construction, Solid build quality, Cage configuration protects camera, Lifetime warranty, Cons: Less configurable then some other rigs, Shoulder plate needs improvement, Handle grips need to be better secured, Lacking top mounting holes for accessories, Bottom line: This is a great rig for the price range of $500, and it seems every month cpmfilmtools.com upgrades or reconfigures rigs based on user input. I happen to own both the indisystem indiSQUARE and the CPM FILM TOOLS DSLR Flyer kit. The indisystem indiSQUARE is one of the lowest priced DSLR rigs I've seen on the market. The entire unit is made out of 6061 aluminum and is very solid. There are 6 mounting holes across the top 2 of which are 1 20 threaded and 4 are 3/8 inch holes with no threads. The indiSQUARE will set you back about $130 + shipping. It's a bit on the heavy side, the handles aren't very durable and it could use a better arranged mounting system, but if your looking to save money this could be a usable option. You can find out more here: indisystem.com The CPM FILM TOOLS DSLR Flyer cage Kit Will cost you about $100 more then the indiSQUARE but the price gets you a number of great upgrades. To start out with the CPM Flyer is about a third the over all weight, It has well designed positionable handles and a much better mounting configuration. It comes standard with a 501 compatible quick release adapter and four 8 inch 15mm rails. The other nice thing about CPM FILM TOOLS gear is that it is fully upgradeable. So in the future you can always buy a few more parts and turn this into a shoulder rig. The CPM FILM TOOLS Cube Cage 3.0 branches out from many of the other Camera squares on the market by using 15mm rails for its upright support. This makes the unit much lighter then many of the other Squares on the market and adds to its modular nature. The Cube Cage 3.0 also adds handle grips on the top and sides making it ideal for hand held work. As with all CPM FILM TOOLS Kits the Cube is made out of carbon fiber material making it both tough and light weight. There are plenty of mounting holes on top and rail clamps can be added for side mounting. If you plan to film projects lasting a day or more, it's a good idea to have at least 4 to 6 camera batteries with you. It's also good to have a few extra chargers. Adding a battery grip to your DSLR Rig makes it much easier to replace batteries and allows the camera to run longer between battery change outs. I personally like the Zeikos battery grips they run about $65 new www.amazon.com But if you're looking for something cheaper, then there several models out there for under $40: www.amazon.com Just remember that they aren't made as well as some of the higher priced models. New generic batteries are chipped, which means they will work the way canon brand batteries will in your 7d.
