Dubrovnik In Your Pocket - Dubrovnik, Croatia Highlights

www.inyourpocket.com The stones of Dubrovnik tell a 13-century-long tale of survival. The Roman city of Ragusa developed into a city-state encompassing the coast as far south as the Bay of Kotor, the Pelješac Peninsula and nearby islands including Mljet and Lastovo. On the walls of Korčula Town, antique cannons still aim across a narrow channel at the village of Orebić, on Pelješac. That's because Korčula was an outpost of Dubrovnik's rival, the Republic of Venice. Legend has it that St. Blaise appeared in a vision in 971 to warn Dubrovnik of an impending Venetian invasion. He's been revered here ever since. But it's appropriate that he's the saint who is celebrated with the blessing of throats. After all, Dubrovnik remained independent and prosperous for more than a millennium on its citizens' powers of negotiation. Now Dubrovnik has thrown open its gates to an annual invasion of thousands of visitors who come to walk its ancient streets, to see the wealth the city amassed through centuries of trade, and to stand on its mighty walls and gaze across the crystalline seas. Croatia - Dubrovnik - TV Traveller

Dubrovnik is a historic city on the Adriatic Sea coast in the extreme south of Croatia. The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. Today Dubrovnik is a tranquil touristic and cultural center hosting many musical, art and theater events year round.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Restored and Thriving

Confined within its walls as it has been for centuries, Dubrovnik juts out from the rocky Croatian coastline looking inviting from both the land and the sea. Though the war killed tourism in the 1990s, today the crowds are most decidedly back. And understandably so — Dubrovnik is a living fairy tale that shouldn't be missed. War Bombings in Dubrovnik

December 1991: Croatian War of Independence was a war in Croatia from 1991 to 1995. Initially, the war was between Croatia and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). Later, the conflict turned into fighting between the armed forces of the newly-independent Croatia and the rebelling Serb minority, who proclaimed an autonomous Republic of Serb Krajina. The Serbs were supported by the Yugoslavian National Army and Belgrade. The Croatian side aimed to establish sovereignty for the Republic of Croatia, previously a federal unit in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Croatia's rebelling Serbs had wanted to remain a part of Yugoslavia, effectively seeking new boundaries in those parts of Croatia with a Serb majority or significant minority. The war was striking for its brutality and intensity.

Siege of Dubrovnik (Raw Footage)

The Siege of Dubrovnik is a term marking the battle and siege of the city of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area in Croatia as part of the Croatian War of Independence.[5][6][7] Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) invaded the Dubrovnik area in October 1991 from Montenegro, Bosnia and even parts of Croatia, surrounding the city in order to conquer it. The three-month bombardment of the port city was one of the events which turned international opinion against the Serbs.[8] Dubrovnik was besieged and attacked in October 1991, with the major fighting ending in early 1992 and the Croatian counterattack finally lifting the siege and liberating the area in mid-1992, despite suffering heavy losses. The heaviest shelling of the city was on St. Nicholas Day, on December 6, 1991, when thirteen civilians were killed, which represented the greatest number of civilian deaths on a single day during the siege.[9] At the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the prosecution alleged "It was the objective of the Serb forces to detach this area from Croatia and to annex it to Montenegro."[10] en.wikipedia.org

Dubrovnik In Your Pocket - Stradun (Placa)

dubrovnik.inyourpocket.com Stradun is the unofficial name for Dubrovnik's main street Placa that joins the two main entrances to the Old Town at Ploče in the east and Pile in the west. The name comes from the Italian "strada", meaning "street". With its shining limestone flags and the uniform baroque buildings that line it, it is itself one of the best known sights of Dubrovnik. It's the place people bump into and chat with friends on their daily business, and dress up for a stroll in the evening or at coffee time. Game of Thrones starts filming in Dubrovnik

Feature about beginning of shooting Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. The feature was shown in central news of Croatian National Television. Rough translation from Croatian: They are saying filming was done on top of Minčeta fortress and they are interviewing executive co-producer Frank Doelger who said they chose Dubrovnik for King's Landing after checking out locations in Spain, France, Italy, Malta and Morocco. They are also interviewing Dominic Carter (which is falsely credited as Jonatan Cohen) who explains he is the leader of the city police called Golden Cloaks and that they were filming a chase scene around town. After him Endrew Wild says the make-up he is wearing shows how badly they tortured him to get information. In the end they are interviewing a Croatian singer Giuliano who is an extra. He says he is a great fan of the show and that they were running up and down the stairs all day. It is mentioned filming would last 4 weeks and it will be done in Dubrovnik and on the island Lokrum. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prilog o početku snimanja Igre Prijestolja u Dubrovniku.
