In the game you shoot birds at pigs using slingshots while the pigs try to protect themselves. The Finnish company Rovio invented it. In fact, the firm was the first to develop and release video games as an app for mobile phones. Up to now it has invented more than 50 such games.

Small farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa are witnessing both drought and flooding increasingly often, and their harvests are suffering. In Ethiopia, some 80 percent of the population is affected. A German-Israeli project shares know-how and provides technical support aimed at teaching Ethiopian farmers how to farm their land sustainably. With engineers training staff from the farming ministry as well as farmers, the cooperation has already given rise to a number of irrigation plants in four locations.

But their existence is endangered because their governments are leasing large tracts of land to foreign companies. Land is cheap in Africa, so companies are snapping it up. Throughout the continent, an estimated 20 million hectares have been leased to foreign companies in the last 2 years. Critics call this land grabbing, because the land is taken from smallholders and the harvests are exported, rather than feeding local residents.

Thousands of people in Laos are now able to improve their lives and boost earnings because they can continue working even after nightfall. The initiative has also attracted interest in Africa.

Bislang hat das Architektentrio mehr als 100 Projekte weltweit geplant - darunter Hotels, Privatwohnungen und Einkaufszentren. .Das englische Wort "to graft" heißt soviel wie "aufpfropfen". Botaniker verstehen darunter, einen Trieb auf einen Wirtsstamm aufzusetzen. Thomas Willemeit, Lars Krückeberg und Wolfram Putz übersetzen dieses Aufpfropfen in die Sprache der Architektur. Für die drei Gründer des Architekturbüros "GRAFT" steht es für das Verbinden von unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Kunst, Philosophie, und Design mit Architektur. Die ist für sie nichts Statisches, sondern ihre Entwürfe wirken, als könnten sie sich bewegen, ausdehnen und drehen. Ihre Häuser sollen Hüllen für die Menschen sein, die sich deren Bedürfnissen anpassen und nicht umgekehrt. Decken, Wände und Fußböden gehen scheinbar fließend ineinander über. Möbel stehen nicht länger frei, sondern sind in den Gesamtentwurf integriert.

„typisch deutsch" - Moderator Hajo Schumacher spricht mit Kathrin Schmidt über ihr Künstlerleben, über Kinder und Krisen.Dem Rummel um ihre Person hat sich Kathrin Schmidt durch das Stipendium an der Villa Massimo erstmal entzogen. Doch zur Arbeit an ihrem neuen Roman ist die Berliner Autorin seit ihrem Umzug nach Rom noch nicht gekommen. Zu viele Aufträge, wie Beiträge für Anthologien oder Zeitschriften, hatte sie nach der Verleihung des Deutschen Buchpreises 2009 angenommen. Den mit 25.000 Euro dotierten Preis erhielt die 52-Jährige für ihren Roman „Du stirbst nicht". Kathrin Schmidt erzählt darin von einer Frau, die eine Gehirnblutung erleidet. Diagnose: Schlaganfall. Im Jahr 2002 erfuhr Kathrin Schmidt dieses Schicksal am eigenen Leib. Kathrin Schmidt wurde 1958 in Gotha in der DDR geboren. Sie studierte Psychologie und schrieb nebenbei Gedichte. Mit ihrer Familie zog die fünffache Mutter in den 80er Jahren nach Ostberlin und arbeitete als Kinderpsychologin. Die kritische Sozialistin saß zur Wendezeit 1989/90 mit am so genannten Zentralen Runden Tisch. Dort verhandelten DDR-Oppositionelle und Regierung über die politische Zukunft ihres Landes. Seit 1994 ist Kathrin Schmidt freie Schriftstellerin. Mehrere Gedichtbände, Kurzgeschichten und vier Romane sind bis heute erschienen.
