Darcus Howe & Richard Seymour on UK Massive Social Unrest and Riots (Democracy Now!) 1 of 2

DemocracyNow.org - Unrest continues to spread across England after protests erupted Saturday in London when police shot to death Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man. Mobs firebombed police stations and sets shops on fire in London, Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham. After waiting for several days, Prime Minister David Cameron has cut short his vacation and recalled Parliament from summer recess. Scotland Yard has ordered its officers to deploy every available force to stop the unrest, including water cannons and possibly the use of plastic bullets. London has been flooded with 16000 officers, the largest police presence in the city's history. Democracy Now! interviews journalist Darcus Howe, a longtime critic of police brutality in black and West Indian communities across the UK, and author and blogger Richard Seymour of the popular British site "Lenin's Tomb." Watch Part 2 of 2: youtu.be "There is a mass insurrection — and I am not talking about rioting — I am talking about an insurrection that comes from the depths of society, from the consciousness collectively of the young blacks and whites, but overwhelmingly black, as a result of the consistent stopping and searching young blacks without cause," says Howe of the uprising. Seymour notes non-violent protests against the police searches have been largely ignored by the British media. Brasseye - Darcus Howe - Delcine Zeitguest CM: "I'm sitting opposite a man, he knows nothing, he talks all the time, the result is he's a trenchant buffoon, he had no idea how to present television shows, he looks ridiculous in that fashion wear. He swans around all the time hoping that people will recognise him, when infact nobody's even remotely interested. He's taken up enough time on this show already and he hasn't even opened his mouth. God knows why he's here, I've nothing to ask the guy. And for all I know he may be a coco shunter too. Darcus Howe. DH: "What's a coco shunter?" CM: "Coco Shunter? That's just what I've got, er, oh, sorry, that's the introduction to Robert Elms. Sorry. Do you know Robert Elms? I've just read out the introduction to Robert Elms."

Darcus Howe - Black Foot on the Backfoot (Part One of 4)

Part of Liverpool's Writing on the Wall Rebel Rants series of events which featured high profile speakers ranting on issues of truth, liberty, democracy and justice. Here Darcus discusses the idea that despite gains made following the inner city uprisings of the 1980's and the publication of the Macpherson Report, in many ways Britain has changed for the worse for black communities. To support his position Darcus charts the return of police stop and search tactics, the drift of young black men into violence, increasing hostility towards immigrants and Muslims, and the establishment's accommodation of the fascist BNP party.

2011 England Riots - Darcus Howe Interview

Darcus Howe (born 1943) is a British broadcaster, columnist, and civil liberties campaigner. Howe was interviewed by Fiona Armstrong for BBC News on 9 August 2011 during the 2011 London riots. During the interview, Armstrong twice referred to him as "Marcus Dowe," then asked: "You are not a stranger to riots yourself, I understand, are you? You have taken part in them yourself." Howe denied this, saying: "I have never taken part in a single riot. I've been part of demonstrations that ended up in a conflict. Have some respect for an old West Indian Negro, and stop accusing me of being a rioter. Because you wanted for me to get abusive, you just sound idiotic, have some respect." The BBC apologised for any offence the interview caused, and said "it had not intended to show him any disrespect".

Darcus Howe "Insurrection of the masses".

BBC interview with West Indian writer gives insight into causes of London riots Sixty-eight-year-old Darcus Howe, a West Indian broadcaster and former editor of the magazine "Race Today," told BBC in an interview Tuesday that he has for some time now been certain that "something very serious was going to take place in this country." Howe, who lives in South London, paints a sobering picture of London today: Our political leaders had no idea, our police had no idea. But if you look at young blacks and young whites with a discerning eye and a careful hearing, they have been telling us, and we would not listen what is happening in this country to them. The BBC anchor interviewing Howe doesn't quite know how to take Howe's comments. "Does this mean you condone what happened in your community?" the anchor says, interrupting Howe mid-sentence. Howe tells the anchor to "have some respect."

Darcus Howe on London Riots (ABC TV) 1024x576

Unlike BBC, ABC did not censor Darcus' Riots commentry and gave him a chance to comment on the BBC incident. Darcus didn't complain when BBC presenter Fiona Armstrong (mis)introduced him twice as "Marcus Dowe" but got annoyed when she tried to censor him and was finally outraged when she accused him of criminal activity in the past. The BBC later published a formal apology online www.bbc.co.uk What you see is an extract from the weekly SBS broadcast of Foreign Correspondent. This report was broadcast on 11-08-30 entitled "Storming High Street".which, although it featured Andrew Fowler interviewing Darcus (from Croydon, a southern suburb), mainly focussed on the riots experience of Ealing (A western suburb). You can watch the full episode (at slightly lower resolution compared to my youtube clip) at www.abc.net.au The BBC did invite him back for a debate the same evening of the embarassing episode, this time with an ex-Tory debate but it turned out lame IMHO youtu.be

Justice for Mark Duggan? Justice was served! Rioting in London + Darcus Howe

Just a quick look at whats going on in london via sky news. Approx 300 protesters gathered outside Tottenham police station to protest the shooting of a young father a couple of days ago. The crowd were told that a police officer would come out to address them but after waiting and waiting, the crowd began throwing missiles and it has now turned into a riot. Youths are reportedly on mobiles organising for more people to come down, and trying to evade police lines. Petrol bombs have been thrown at police and two patrol cars, a bus and buildings have been set on fire in a disturbance in Tottenham, north London. The incident began after a protest over the fatal shooting of a young man by police on Thursday turned violent. About 300 people have gathered outside the police station on the High Road. Members of the community had taken to the streets to demand "justice" after the shooting of 29-year-old father-of-four Mark Duggan. The BBC's Ben Ando, who is at the scene, described the situation as a "stand off" between police and protesters and said firefighters had come under attack. Dubblestandart feat.Hoda Mohajerani & Darcus Howe: Stay Calm & Carry On - London Dub.m4v

...as musicians we are sometimes bound to just watch helpless what this world has created and to find appropriate and respectful sonic interpretations on what is important or should have gone public. This is a version of a track we did during our current recordings for our forthcoming release covering an interview Mr. Howe gave BBC where he is pointing out the reasons of the recent riots shaking England, caused by unfair social conditions that rose over the last decades, resulting in an easily flammable climate. Major parts of the society are left without a job or a vision about their possible prosper future: What is the difference between a politically driven mind that supports the cause and somebody that is just supporting senseless rioting. And even for those in anger we might have some understanding when their despair results in pure aggression and hate. Nevertheless the BBC interviewer seems to mute the facts Mr.Howe is outlining, as it is usually the case when mainstream media goes in the streets to gain some catchy pictures....on the back of those who lost faith, while the name of the game for those in the street facing reality remains "Stay Calm & Carry On"! In dub we trust. Troublecompressor Headquarter Vienna Aug 2011 (This track has'nt and will not be released anywhere else on one of our commercial products.)
