David Byrne on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos

www.cbc.ca David Byrne is one of the most creative all-around artists alive. In the early '70s, David formed the 'Talking Heads', which went on to become one of the most influential groups in music. They were anti-corporate, experimental and helped revolutionize music videos. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. David's been honoured by the Grammy's, Golden Globes and has even won an Oscar for 'The Last Emperor' soundtrack. He's also an accomplished visual artist - turning an entire building into a giant musical instrument and designing a series of bike racks for New York City. These days, he's teamed up again with music whiz Brian Eno. They've put out a new album together called 'Everything That Happens Will Happen Today' Brian did the music, David the lyrics and voice. They're calling it gospel-folk-electronic.

Home- such a funny feeling Home- no-one ever speaking Home- with our bodies touching Home- and the cam'ras watching Home- will infect what ever you do We're Home- comes to life from outa the blue Tiny little boats on a beach at sunset I took a drink from a jar and into my head Familiar smells and flavors Vehicles are stuck on the plains of heaven I see their wheels spinning round and everywhere I can hear those people saying That the eye- is the measure of the man You can fly- from the stuff that still surrounds you We're home- and the band keeps marchin' on Connecting- to every living soul Compassion- for things I'll never know Album: Everything That Happens Will Happen Today

Playing the Building: An installation by David Byrne

Imagine an old pump organ, set at the heart of the Roundhouse, with a series of low-tech cables and wires attached to the buildings pillars, pipes and beams. Then imagine the ping, rattle and blow as they vibrate and resonate in response to the organ keys, and the building itself becomes a giant musical instrument. Playing the Building, David Byrnes interactive sound installation, drew crowds to New Yorks Battery Maritime Building last year. This August sees the UK premiere of his vision of Victorian steam-punk technology at the 160-year-old Roundhouse. The shutters are off the windows of the domed roof, revealing the building in a new light the perfect setting for visitors of all ages to explore the Victorian architecture and have the chance to play the building. David Byrne co-founded Talking Heads in 1974. Hes also released solo music projects and worked in film, photography, dance and opera winning Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe awards. ... Will Happen Today. I ride on a perfect freeway Many people on that road I heard the sound of someone laughing I saw my neighbors car explode Just up ahead Against the sky Quicker than you blink your eye Chorus: Oh my brother, I still wonder, are you alright? And among the living, we are giving, all through the night From the milk of human kindness From the breast we all partake Hungry for a social contract She welcomes you with dark embrace (puts) socks and shoes Upon our feet Little fishes swim upstream Oh my brother, I still wonder, are you alright? In the deepest silence, gold and diamonds, all through the night Everything that happens will happen today & nothing has changed, but nothing's the same and ev'ry tomorrow could be yesterday &and ev'rything that happens will happen today ev'rything that happens will happen today and nothing has changed but nothing's the same & ev'ry tomorrow could be yesterday and ev'rything that happens could happen today

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim - The Whole Man

A concept album based around the lives of Imelda Marcos and her nanny Estrella Cumpas, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's (Norman Cook) Here Lies Love is primarily a great pop record featuring a bevy of name female vocalists. Grand conceptual themes aside, Byrne, Slim, and Slim cohort Tom Gandey (aka Cagedbaby) have delivered a kooky, fun, theatrical, and — more often than not — deliriously listenable collection of '70s and '80s club pop. Inspired by a disparate set of sources, not the least of which included his reading of Ryszard Kapuscinski's book The Emperor as well as various reports detailing the former First Lady of the Philippines' penchant for disco and club life, Byrne formulated this would-be stage production based around the notion — as he says in the liner notes — of the "bubble worlds of the rich and powerful" set to the popular sounds (disco, soul, Latin beats, cabaret) of Marcos' time in power. While there is no dialogue in this production, Byrne has crafted each track throughout the album to tell the story and evoke the emotional state of Marcos and her longtime nanny Cumpas' emotional state. And while the story hangs together quite well, the main impression you are left with is that Byrne and Slim have impeccable taste in female singers. Here we get British songstress Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) delivering the title prologue track, an anthemic disco-inflected number that recalls any number of Studio 54 diva hits. David Byrne, "People Tree" from NASA dir. Syd Garon + Johannes Gamble

More online: www.boingboing.net Boing Boing Video is proud to present the world-premiere of a new video with David Byrne from the forthcoming music documentary NASA (Myspace Link), with art by Marcel Dzama and animation by Syd Garon. The track is "The People Tree," and also features the musical stylings of Chali 2na, Gift Of Gab & Z-Trip. We've been watching this one take shape, musically and visually, for months, and I'm so excited to be blogging this today. Mr. Byrne, who is currently on tour supporting his collaboration with Brian Eno, "Everything That Happens," tells Boing Boing from the road: "Since I wrote a tune and some words for Mr Clean's track various layers of meaning have been added- not the least of which is Marcel's animated video. Having first seen his work at a show by the Royal Art Lodge collective I wondered if there might be something in the water up there in Winnipeg. Here is the voice of God speaking through an old Oak tree- which seems perfectly right...and it complements the song perfectly, as do the ghosty spermy spirits at one point. anyway, I'm flattered and thrilled that this all happened- I never would have dreamed it, but now I do." And Syd Garon, who animated and directed this beautiful gem of a video, says: "Lance Accord had an old roll of film he left out in the sun for 5 years, he shot the film for us then we aged it pretty good as per Marcel's request. I dragged it up and down the street several times, walked all over it and then let the ...

Bodies with Organs: A Treatise to Playing The Building

In conjunction with Creative Time, Playing the Building is a project by David Byrne in which he turns a 9000 sq. ft abandoned room in the Battery Maritime Building into an instrument. Through the use of an antique pump organ, controlled devices create sounds with only what is afforded by the building's infrastructure, including heating pipes, metal beams and pillars. Challenging the project, curator Mark Beasley invited accomplished musicians to perform an improvisational piece with the building. The result is a captivating and unique musical experience.
